Copulate would have sounded silly in there. My dictionary says it's "coarse slang". My interpretation of the word's context in her letter is angry, sensual sex. Copulate doesn't carry that meaning, but fuck certainly does. "Copulate - v. - join, link together 2 - Of a male and female; have copulation, unite sexually (with)
The meanings are clearly different. Fuck is still a word used to denote the worst kind of insult on people, but it *does* have another meaning, at least two other meanings, in fact, and when used properly it is *not* uncivil.
