Deputies aren't required to do anything at all, and I always chose not to make the close calls, because I might think something was uncivil that Dr. Bob didn't (which was frequently the case) and vice versa (less often the case). And there are specific guidelines for when deputies can act, so there were times I'd be really tense because there was a clearly uncivil post but no uncivil replies and I'd be afraid that everything would blow up while I was away from the computer. And also, I hated having to give a PBC to someone for replying to the uncivil post, but the rules for deputies seemed pretty clear to me, unless I misunderstood them all that time. I was to do nothing until there was an uncivil reply as well as an uncivil post, and I was left with the unfortunate necessity of having to give out PBC's to both.

That being said, while most people appreciate the difficult situation a deputy is in and were quite kind and forgiving, a reasonably thick skin is necessary at times. There really is no way to please all the people all the time, and there was the occasional negativity along with a lot of positive feedback directed towards me as deputy. I don't have a thick skin by nature, and it did require a certain amount of energy to keep a false one in place as much as possible. :) And very occasionally, posters who got PBC's or blocks got pretty angry and lashed out.

So is it odd to say I highly recommend the experience? I probably put more stress on myself than I needed to, but that's true of everything for me. And overall, I really do appreciate Dr. Bob giving me the opportunity to discover new abilities and strengths within myself.

If you'd like to do it, don't let disagreeing with Dr. Bob over some things deter you. I disagreed with him all the time. :)
