You raise a good point about how someone can actually say something insensitive, and different people will react to the comments differently depending on their dispostions and sensitivities, and sometimes we can perceive insensitivity in others when it may not be coming from them but from our own insecurities or fears. Sometimes it's hard to know the difference. So, sometimes you might want to "check it out" by asking them what they meant. In your example, you could ask the person why they want to know your credentials. It puts the onus back on the person to explain their intentions rather than you feeling like you have to defend yourself. I don't know the context because I haven't read the posts but asking a question or choosing not to answer questions you're uncomfortable with are both options.
