For me, increased negative self talk is the first sign of trouble. When I notice that, I start activites which have helped me in the past to delay or prevent bouts of depression. It's just a trick that helps me - a bit like some folks with bi-polar d/o might note changes in their handwriting as a sign of imminent changes.
Sometimes staying outta the pit is a full-time job. :-)
