Dr. Bob - misleading screen names

Posted by sb417 on December 8, 2003, at 14:02:40

Dr. Bob, I'd like to hear your thoughts and everyone else's thoughts on the use of the title "Doctor" or "Dr." in Psychobabble screen names. I think that posters should be prohibited from using that title unless they really have earned a doctorate. And, even if they do have a doctorate in some field, I wonder whether they should use the title in their screen names. Unless those with doctorates intend to discuss their subject of expertise on the board, I think that using the title may mislead and confuse some posters. Every so often, real physicians do post on this board. For example, Dr. Ivan Goldberg stops by occasionally and writes about topics related to his specialty (psychopharmacology). He uses his real name, so there is no question that he is who he says he is. That, of course, is acceptable -- and welcomed! Other than instances like that, I think it would be in everyone's best interest if the use of professional titles was prohibited in screen names.
