A friend's therapist explained that for people who were physically abused as children, their world includes the sequence of "feeling bad" (like they have done something bad) followed by physical pain. When they grow up, SI is a way to make their world feel "normal" to them - bad feelings followed by physical pain. In that way, SI makes them feel like their world is intact.

Not all people who SI were physically abused, but this does add another logical reason to the list of reasons to SI.
