Shar, I do hope you don't mind my responding to your post on Admin. I always feel uncomfortable responding to a post from the 2000 or 2001 boards. If it's considered eavesdropping, please let me know and I won't do it anymore.
Of course I wasn't around at the time (hence not being able to post on 2000) but I have read the archives and do remember all of that. I was wondering when someone would bring it up.
Human nature is funny isn't it? Over time I've belonged to doll clubs and dog clubs and my husband belonged to a religious organization. Dolls, dogs, and religion - what could be safer than that?!! And everytime, I've either left or restricted my participation because of the nastiness involved. It's usually only a small number of people who are responsible for most of it, but it creates an unpleasant environment. That's why I so appreciate the relative safety of a moderated board. I guess like the governments of the "democratic" countries, it may not be perfect but it's the best of the possible alternatives.
Or at least that's how I see it. Obviously it's a matter of personal preference. Ain't freedom grand?
