Hah! You're supposed to be the hardware wiz! Computer hardware has never been my bag (most of my computers are 486/386's), but I would suggest that you build a new one... It's not that difficult, plus you can put together a decent system for less than half what you would pay for a new one (and you could just reuse your current drives, monitor, etc.).

As for upgrading... Make sure you get the correct processor & memory for your motherboard type... I'm not sure how easy it is to upgrade processors these days, but if you do it yourself, you need to be careful putting it in (don't worry about the brand as long as it's somewhat well-known; it's best to get one a little bit slower than the fastest speed -- the only noticeable difference would probably be the pricetag). Memory is dirt cheap now, so just put in as much as it can hold. You also want to think about upgrading things like the hard drive(s), video RAM, cache, etc. -- there's more to a fast system than serotonin, err.. processor speed! Sorry if this is too basic, but I'm not very up-to-date on hardware.

No problem!

I can definitely empathise.
