Time, Experience Balance on PSB

Dear Friends,

Coming on this thread late due to my recent workload, I have to say how much I see the truth in everyone's point of view.

Judy was spot-on in coming to PBA and explicitly asking a question about her response to Old School's postings. That showed wonderful skill and clarity, and kindness in extending Old School the benefit of the doubt.

Old School erred (in my opinion) in his response to Judy, yet the substantive core of Old School's argument was also entirely valid. Likewise, if fear of persecution is part of Old School's suffering, then his assumptions were understandable if over-stated.

How do we self-manage in a community of people who are mentally and emotionally ill, where (as Dr. Bob points out) everyone is sensitive?

Some of my early posts were received as threatening and unkind, in part because I am used to a type of therapy that is confrontive and risks presumption to evoke growthful responses. However, over time (and with plenty of reminders from Dr. Bob and others), I accepted that this is NOT the place to utilize confrontive techniques except in the most positive of ways (I still confront people with the good I see in them).

However, it took me almost two years to develop a style of interacting on-line that is both true to my understanding and beliefs AND remains "supportive and educational" within the experience of the majority of participants. I've always admired those here who (unlike me) seemed to come quite naturally to the right balance.

Whether you took a side in this debate or not, your opinions are valid, useful and appreciated. If it appears that you "lost" or "won" the argument, take some time out and re-read what you and others wrote with greater objectivity. Everyone had something important and true to say.

It's good to take breaks, whether self-imposed or not. It's also good to come back and state your truth from a supportive and positive perspective.

With appreciation for all of you,

Mark H.
