Asperger's

Posted by allisonm on March 3, 2005, at 10:01:28

My SO and I have been having relationship problems for some time now, and it's been worse in the last few months. I think I mentioned earlier that I thought he was crazy. There's a long list that I could go into regarding his behavior. In short, he's been mean, reclusive, moody, very aloof, and generally oblivious to my feelings. I could go into an equally long list of why I care for him.

Recently, the idea of autism came up and I did some research. After a lot of reading on the Internet and in books, we've come to the conclusion that he has Asperger's Syndrome, which is a milder form of autism found in high-functioning people. In reading these books we both have had a number of "ah-ha" moments that make a whole lot of sense of his behaviors and my reactions. I am feeling relief that I now at least understand why he acts the way he does in situations, and I think he understands that he's not the only one on the planet who is hard wired the way he is and that there are ways to make life easier for both of us. He's been much more cooperative and understanding lately, and I have been too, I think mostly because we both understand better what the other is feeling and needs.

So things are better. Thanks for listening. If anyone has experience with AS, I'm all ears.
