I was reading that in the Sears Roebuck catalogue of 1890 something you could buy a syringe (for all the family?)and some cocaine for around $1.50.

Bit activating. I think I prefer sleep.

I'm very slow. Just got up. Only one cup of tea. And I'm frightened of the common area. I pause too long between their Hola and my Buenas Dias, and I know what they are thinking.

So bear with me while I ask you why what you say is so.

Christmas hasn't come yet. It didn't take you all this time to open last years, surely?

This has been coming to mind

In depraved May, dogwood and chestnut, flowering Judas,
To be eaten, to be divided, to be drunk
Among whispers; by Mr. Silvero
With caressing hands, at Limoges
Who walked all night in the next room;
By Hakagawa, bowing among the Titians;
By Madame de Tornquist, in the dark room
Shifting the candles; Fraulein von Kulp
Who turned in the hall, one hand on the door. Vacant shuttles
Weave the wind. I have no ghosts,
An old man in a draughty house
Under a windy knob.

I need to get out of here. The walls are thin as paper.

Funny you mention crochet. I bought a hook and yarn on Friday and crocheted a hat for my son. It's large, so I guess it will be mine. There is enough yarn to make another for him. He still likes homemade clothes. Actually, he weaves. I need to get up off me *rs* and dress a loom for him. (speaking of vacant shuttles).

Homemade is best unless I visit a local artisan gallery in town. Suddenly I become inflamed with desire for handmade earrings and gorgeous hand painted silk scarves. I usually stay out.

My birthday is next week. I may drop a hint as to where my hubster can take the boy. My son has nice taste :)

Other than that, it's gonna be a handmade hand baked Christmas. We could do a crochet exchange. You get to any wood burning?

I meant I was weary and had come to the end of being surprised. A dreary message, and I much prefer the responses :)

I do remember the poem. You are living as an expatriate. Is Spain gorgeous in Granada? You still there? If we can swing it, I want to visit Portugal. Or Vietnam. I'll need to ask you about the best season to visit if we even think of going there. If we have the financing.

I mentioned to SG that my birthday is next week. How's that time machine coming along? I would take a syringe full of coke from Sears. Think I won't give any to the seven year old. He does not need it.

Isn't that the nice thing about Christmases? One does end, but another will come sooner or later. Life wraps some up every day. True, some are gag gifts, but still...

Your son is young still. You have many years of packages, precious or gag gift, to come. With a child in the house, it's is impossible to be without gifts or past surprise for very long.

What I want is a VERY slow release form of cocaine, such as is found in the leaf which you chew.

Or perhaps it would not be beyond the ability of modern science to create one.

If all else failed you could eat it.

Really, by any objective standard, I am a worry, but be buggered if I know how to compress it into a half hour conversation with a doctor.

As I was leaving Senegal I had this interesting experience. I was going in and out of the safety of the Pullman Tarrango where I could do internet banking, and I had to fight my way through, and I end up chatting with this young man, and since I had a whole day to put it, we spent some time together after I had watered down any expectations he had to a reasonable level. After some beers and a Senegalese lunch, he took me to what must have been the family compound of some relatives, hoicks this couch over a barrier, and told me to make myself comfortable while he prepared some Senegalese tea, which is made with gunpoweder green tea, very strong, with mint and sugar. And then he picked up a cat which was lying there and carried it off by the tail. When he came back I said with a laugh 'Was that cat dead?' and he said 'It has been there since this morning'. So he made the tea and we talked more and in the process of this I find out that he spoke ten languages. He at first dismissed this by saying that four of them were internal languages, but when you added it up you did get to ten. He was even talking about the use of the subjunctive in Spanish vs English. Incorrectly I thought, when it came to English, but I hardly know what the subjunctive is....he had to tell me and I may not have understood correctly. Under the shade of a beautiful black sapote tree.

So that is what I imagine the Spanish thinking between their Hola and my Buenas Dias.....monolingual idiot. They may not even think it, but I do. Australia is not the easiest place in which to learn other languages.

I am 59 in a couple of weeks. Do you know of any good antidepressants that don't ruin sleep? it's hard, isn't it, this business of being alive. Australia annoys the sh*t out of me but at least I won't have to drink so much.

Granada is nice enough for me to have explored much of it on foot. I think I will come back here, in the off season if there is one. It is surprisingly hot, even now. But my impression is that the world seems tired, just like me. The Senegalese on the streets here sell all kinds of useless crap, but as soon as the rain comes they are in front of various kinds of umbrellas saying 'Paraguas, paraguas', like the call of some lovely animal. Nice to see them selling something useful after the fake watches and sunglasses.

>Christmas? I heard it's cancelled this year due to economy. And too much stress

Do you think there's some mileage in that. Spread it around, it might catch on.

Last year my wife flat out refused to do another and we got a cheap flight to Japan instead and had Christmas in Koya San.

They are selling them again, only 150 one way, probably fear of earthquakes and radioactivity.

There's something depressing about Christmas in the heat.

If the kids aren't there I don't mind, as long as they are doing something nice.

Sigi I lived in Southern Florida when first two kids 2.5 years and 5 years old. Was a great Christmas as because of no snow etc of the North East where from they went all out to create lots for kids at Christmas. So all in all I do like Christmas in the heat. So you will fly to Japan this year? Well you also are not hitting the magic number yet so you a youngster to me. Love PJx
