So, if this little song made someone smile in the US or Canada, I feel satisfied.

This is mostly because I was told long ago that the citizens of these countries have sent nice parcels eg. to my father during the so-called Finnish Winter War in 1939/40 when the Red Army attacked my small country, and my grandfather, with all the other adult males in his community, had to take their weapons, join the Finnish Army and try to stop the attack.

And they managed .... I'm so grateful.

Hi Ms Canada, thanks for the message,
i hope U like beautiful photos:
here´s one taken by my brother-in-law,
for U and all your friends to see,
i hope U'll get it,
and i hope anyone who likes it lets me know,
i'll try another format if it doesn't come for U to C
pls take a close look to the left of the flower:
the tiny insect, a finnish small mosquito, not dangerous at all,
also created by God,
enjoying the warm sunshine on a small sw-finnish lake,
enjoying life, be it short and dull...

have a nice spring,
yours Richie.

PS. My grandfather immigrated Canada in 1920s but came back to fight for his own country,
he always was a strong supporter of Ice Hockey Team Canada.

I do like beautiful photos.

Just to let you know though the link requires you to enter a GMail account and password. I don't have those.

Well, you know we are quite mad about ice hockey here. Yes, life is meant to be enjoyed as much as you can. You enjoy the Spring too.

Oh yes, my country really is beautiful,

but the people are also used to wars, hunger etc.

and U can see it on eg. finnish paintings,

i don't know if U are one of the wounded angels, like the one on this sad, beautiful masterpiece,

http://www.ateneum.fi/default.asp?docId=11990

but i suppose some of you, my new readers are...

and i try to help you if i only can.

Thanks, it really was nice to talk. I'm glad you liked the Finnish painting i sent. You'll easily get some more if you wish.

About my first name. I got it in 1955 in Finland, it is Risto. The Swedish version is Kristian, so in English perhaps Chris would be the nearest one. But of course you can call me whatever, eg. Ritch, and why not Claus Santanen?

A link to the Finnish calendar, my nameday is the 15th March.

Yours Chris

PS. This morning i saw at the news that the Finnish Flash had scored last night 3+2 for the Ducks against the Black Hawks. So he really is getting to be in good shape again after the break. :)

Dear Phillipa

I feel it nice that u are interested in my small country, i like that. Now i have some information for you:

http://virtual.finland.fi/

My roots are in Ostrobothnia, the eastern cost of the Gulf of Bothnia. My ancestors come from a village called Yliharma, and there is a nice little clip to be seen. (perhaps you recognize the melody.....) :)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ofZFlr1V14A

it is sung in the local dialect by a humourous band...

many immigrants therefrom live nowadays in the states around the Great Lakes states both in the USA and Canada...

Would you rather we just call you Risto?? If that's what everyone calls you - no need to "Anglicize" it unless you particularly want to.

So Risto - or Richie - or Chris. You choose what you want us to call you okay?

:-) Kath

thanks Kath,

well, superb would perhaps not be the best possible adjective in my case, :)

i'm 52 and studied a.o.t. english on the finnish school system from the age of 10,

i've got degree B in the 80s in one university and M in the 00s in another, the main subjects not being english but of course including language studying,

and foremost reading and reading ... thick and heavy books written in english by american, english, german etc. professors .... :)

plus: of course our TV is crowded with programmmes in american or english, with finnish texts,

(btw that is in my opinion one of the reasons behind our pupils' success in certain international tests and comparisons)

i've got a lot of problems, but at least this is a good practice,

so if there sometimes happens to be a totally "wrong" word amid my text,

pls put at least 50% of the mistake on the account of my laziness (to use dictionaries)...

:)

yours chris

OK - Chris it is!!

I still say your English is VERYYY good!

Do you often have trouble sleeping right through the night?

Lately I've been waking earlier than I usually do & then I can't get back to sleep even tho I'm tired.

Dear Kath

Well, i think precisely the one you mentioned is also the foremost problem of mine. If i were sleeping normally, i think i wouldn't have any problems of health at all. Of course there are reasons for not to sleep... but anyway.

I wake up each and every night. When i'm ok, i just fall asleep again. When i'm not, i can't sleep again. After 2-3 weeks of bad sleep i then lose my working ability.

Now when i have a bit too much "rpm" in my engine, and also because the disease named my Dr Parkinson was found, i got the new sero medicine. The last couple of nights i slept well, first 50 when going to bed and then another 50 after waking up in the middle of the night. I think i'll be allright in a couple of weeks and get back to work.

(btw... now i find it amusing that in the middle of the European night i can communicate with Americans..... and vv)

Sometimes it's just that my heart is beating too densely to let me sleep. But I also have medicine for that, called bisoprolol. It helps.

I think the problems are easier to handle in the age of 52: you already know them by experience and don't have to worry....

Yours Chris
