Hi everyone,
I'm going to be in the Bay area for just over a week soon. My husband has been looking up things for us to do. Anyone have suggestions? So far he's just looked into going to see some redwoods at some large park (I forget where).I'd be interested in hearing about just about anything that's interesting there--both touristy and non-touristy things.

I find it to be a grueling drive, but then I live where it's very flat. It helped for me to be the one who was driving - otherwise, my fingers were cramped from digging into the seats of the car with all the twisty turns in getting there.

Some great food specialty shops - like a mushroom store! - and of course the best cafes and restaurants, all contained in a beautifully restored building on the waterfront. Oh, and the ferries stop there.
I even enjoyed Sonoma and Napa valleys, acting as chauffeur for the wine tasters. Simply beautiful scenery with little gems of towns and oodles of great shopping.

My suggestion the Napa Valley been there once and a drive down the coast the seals on on the rocks there. Phillipa ps oh and the prison is in the middle of the water near the golden gate bridge.

That sounds wonderful! My b-i-l and his wife are "foodies", so they might enjoy it, too. I expect they've been there before and can clue us in.

We didn't get to go to any wineries, but we took a trip on the "Wine Train". That was, er, interesting, but not my favorite thing.

Thanks Phillipa. Good suggestions. We did the Alcatraz tour last time, and it was fascinating. Plus, anytime you can get out on the bay is great (weather permitting, of course).

The Exploratorium is a great deal of fun -- and your hubby might enjoy it, too.
http://www.exploratorium.edu/The Palace of the Legion of Honor is probably my favorite museum in the City. The City art museums are sorted, more of less, by their collections. Roughly, European is at the Palace of the Legion of Honor, American is at the deYoung. Both are good destinations, with a lot to see. (The deYoung is in Golden Gate Park, so you'd be near growing things -- including the Arboretum and the Japanese Tea Garden, which are both lovely places to visit.

The Academy of Sciences gave me hours and hours of thrills as a kid, and I'd even try to go with you now. I haven't been since they rebuilt. DOH! Just saw they haven't reopened yet. They do have a temporary site downtown.

Berkeley has the Hearst museum of anthropology.

We went to Golden Gate park yesterday. I especially loved the Shakespeare garden.

We dashed through the ferry terminal bldg. the other day to catch a ferry to Tiburon. Lovely place. Great place to visit. Can't afford to live there. I'll have to check out the terminal on a return visit.

We saw some very cute, very loud seals at Pier 39. Today we're driving up the coast. Looking forward to it. :)
