Well, your post has my husband reeling off place names -- Tabletop Mountain, Gary's Junction, and others. I do wish I could go see it all.
I felt more at home in Melbourne than I have ever felt anywhere. In fact, I'm a notoriously picky eater. It's hard for me to eat in restaurants, or anyone's house, because I'm too picky. (Yes, I've been told that's part of my eating disorder. Not a part I feel any need to work on, though.) Melbourne was a dream, because everything I ate was wonderful. My ex was amazed -- "wow! We can even take you to fast food places here!" The air felt wonderful on my skin -- although the flies were pretty amazing. And the public art downtown was fabulous.
The house where my husband grew up was for sale recently, and he showed me pictures of it online. I'd like to go there, too. And he has most of his parents' things in storage over there, which I've always wanted to have shipped over to us. Store them here, probably, but at least he'd have access to them.
By the way, do you have recipes for risoles or scones? Pikelets? He keeps saying he wants them, but we haven't been able to find acceptable recipes. Can you maybe help?
If we do visit, I'd love to meet you, too.

There's this place called 'The Gowrie Mountain', which was pronounced such that you might have thought it was spelled 'Gaarie'. I suppose there is a connection between that and Gary's Junction, but I'm not sure. Certainly your husband will be quite familiar with Jondaryan, where the strikes of the 1890s started. I come from further out that way.
I like Melbourne. Not like Sydney where everyone (well, maybe not everyone) is rude and in a hurry, half dead or brittle from too much botox, talking about their time management and their real estate.
I have just been through "The Women's Weekly Best Ever Recipes", and such is the decline that there is no mention there of pikelets, scones or rissoles. Makes me nostalgic for the days when the only place you could buy olive oil (and opium) was the chemist, although that was a little before my time.
If I was trying to make rissoles I would have on hand
Half (salad) onion finely copped
grated carrot, or
grated beetroot
(anything like that)
mince
1 egg
herbs
Oil for panMake sure the onion is finely chopped. Combine mince, grated vegies, herbs and beaten eggs, salt and pepper and knead (is I guess what you do) until it's all mixed up. Coat with flour, and flatten each rissole a little because they tend to burn on the outside and you don't want them raw inside. Don't make them too big. Perhaps you can cook them in a slow pan with a lid on if necessary, but you don't want them to stew either.
And if you should visit I would love to meet you too.

I'm a Melbourne boy, and Racer and Sigismund are right. If you want to eat like a king them come down to Melbourne. I'd be more than happy to show you around. Sydney is beautiful and very scenic, but I couldn't live there, it's a fantastic place to visit though. I lived in brisbane (brisvegas, as the locals call it) for 2 years and it's OK. Please let us know where you're going to be and when. If you decided to come to Melbourne I'll meet up with you.

We thought the Bridge rather than the Opera House should be the background.
Bob had remarked on the bridge.There's a Grace Cossington Smith painting of the bridge, nearing completion, as a kind of revelation, in 1930 something.

You can enlarge the image to see the picture, but I was amazed when I stood in front of her paintings.....there's this extraordinary brushwork.I liked talking about the difference between posting and letter/email writing, the evolving nature of the thread and the time constraints thereby imposed, the fact that posting demands an awareness of multiple perspectives as against just two(?) in letter writing.
(A literary version of a bar room argument without the anaesthetic?)

Sorry to have missed you all.
As it tuned out ,I wouldn't have been able to make it, as a truck hit my car back on 8th August, and doing much above getting out of bed at that stage was beyond me;-)
I've only just now recalled my password for both babble and my associated email address.. so just caught up with the emails from Sigismund and Damos, inviting me and alerting me to this thread.
I've been reading alter though on and off :-)

I've never been to Japan, but it sounds like a commendable idea. KOrea seems to have some good fast trains too from what I've heard.
I did like Wales and England, but I assume a lot of Europe would be similar with the tiny narrow roads which no truck can fit on!(some don't fit cars either:-)
I fear we use trucks way too much here which not only makes roads dangerous but also stifle local produce local produce and smaller shops etc, and makes the place way easy for Maccas, Kentucky Fried, Pizza Hut and large supermarket chains to dominate.
It was easy to get fresh egss, cream etc in Wales.. no supermarkets or any of the US -style fast food chains that I could find much except on outskirts of major towns, and I never saw any trucks on the roads either, even the major highways? I was thinking maybe they only allow them at night after 9PM or something?
Contract that to the Prices hwy at Wollongong, say going down Mt Ousley in the morning..I'm sure semis outnumber cars.
