Depressiogenic music *possible triggers*

Posted by Quintal on April 30, 2007, at 17:22:14

How is this for speaking from the heart of the depressive episode? You can tell whoever wrote it has been there:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NNre5neZ6QI
--------------------------------------------------
Call you up in the middle of the night
Like a firefly without a light
You were there like a slow torch burning
I was a key that could use a little turning

So tired that I couldn't even sleep
So many secrets I couldn't keep
Promised myself I wouldn't weep
One more promise I couldn't keep

It seems no one can help me now
I'm in too deep
There's no way out
This time I have really led myself astray

CHORUS
Runaway train never going back
Wrong way on a one way track
Seems like I should be getting somewhere
Somehow I'm neither here no there

Can you help me remember how to smile
Make it somehow all seem worthwhile
How on earth did I get so jaded
Life's mystery seems so faded

I can go where no one else can go
I know what no one else knows
Here I am just drownin' in the rain
With a ticket for a runaway train

Everything is cut and dry
Day and night, earth and sky
Somehow I just don't believe it

CHORUS

Bought a ticket for a runaway train
Like a madman laughin' at the rain
Little out of touch, little insane
Just easier than dealing with the pain

Runaway train never comin' back
Runaway train tearin' up the track
Runaway train burnin' in my veins
Runaway but it always seems the same

In the 70s I used to listen to a group called Van Der Graaf Generator, which was really Peter Hammill.
He had albums with names like 'The Least We Can Do Is Wave To Each Other'.

'Killer'.

So you live in the bottom of the sea,
and you kill all that come near you ....
but you are very lonely, because all the other fish
fear you .....
And you crave companionship and someone to call your own;
because for the whole of your life you've been living alone.
On a black day in black month
at the black bottom of the sea,
Your mother gave birth to you and died
immediately ....
'Cos you can't have two killers living in the same pad
and when your mother knew that her time had come
she was really rather glad.
Death in the sea, death in the sea,
somebody please come and help me, come and help me
Fishes can't fly, fishes can't fly,
Fishes can't and neither can I, neither can I ....
Now I'm really rather like you,
for I've killed all the love I ever had
by not doing all I ought to and by leaving my mind coming
bad.
And I too am a killer, for emotion runs as deep as flesh
and I too am so lonely, and I wish that I could forget
We need love,
We need love,
We need love ..........

you can listen to my all time favourite. John Cale, 'The Endless Plain of Fortune', from 'Paris 1919'.

http://www.last.fm/music/John+Cale/_/The+Endless+Plain+of+Fortune

The lyrics of which are

Old Taylor said
Old Taylor meant to cry -- oh my
Field Marshall meant
Field Marshall went away again
Watch out below; the tides
Lean heavily like wine
We are all innocent in spite of you and me

Then Martha went
Yes Martha went away again
Down in Transvaal
Where Crocodiles and men fight on
They would have played all night
Even with loaded dice
It's gold that eats the heart away and leaves
The bones -- to dry

Segovia watched
Gendarmerie and all that's all
The radio man
Amanda did you choose your tune
She walked away in time
She walked a crooked line
So gracefully she turned her head
And smiled -- away

Unfortunately the link to The Endless Plain of Fortune only lasted 15 secs or so.
I don't quite know why it has been so moving for me.
Perhaps the repeated references to leaving, or the suggestion of death in war, or nostalgia for a vanishing past.

That's very nice of you to say that, Phil.

(I always feel that I stop threads and am some kind of public nuisance.)

So here's a little treat for you.

I love Van Der Graaf Generator! Sorry I've been out of the loop with these guys. I live vicariously through the singer.

Thanks for turning me on to them.

Thanks for the links Dec, what type of music is that and what do the lyrics mean? Reminds me a little bit like the otherworldly style of David Bowie for some reason. Was this during your 'acid years' perchance :-)?

Yep. That's the kind of music we sat around and smoked dope to.

The lyrics are about our mental states.

I don't know what sort of music it is. English experimental music? When I listen now to music I listend to then, it strikes me how experimental it was.
I suppose they had a background in classical music.

Miss Shapiro

All the Peasants in the Squares
At Their Tables and Their Chairs
Set to Salvage Certain Numbers
From the Wonder of the Tundra
And the Muses in the Gloom
Counting Needles in Their Rooms
On the Carpet in the Corner
In a Kind of Secret Slumber
While the in Formation Rain
Slashed the Dirty Window Pane to the Square.

Smoky Broads and Smoky Windows in the Square
Come Come Charmer Come On Over For the Day
Disappearing Cocoa Forests Flash and Die
Fortunes Crumble All Demolished in the Bay.

Over Forty Pointed People
In the Perfect Pointed Steeple
Looked to See the Lucky Number
Yes the Wonder of the Tundra
Had Come Up to Fame and Fortune
Singing His Tune, My Tune, Your Tune
Wooing Daughters of the Gifted
On the Carpets of the Courtrooms
While the Tickets Were Expensive
The Show Was Quite Relentless in the Square.

Smoky Broads and Smoky Windows in the Square
Come Come Charmer Come On Over For the Day
Disappearing Cocoa Forests Flash and Die
Fortunes Crumble All Demolished in the Bay

Dalai Llama Lama Puss Puss
Stella Maris Missa Nobis
Miss a Dinner Miss Shapiro
Shampoos Pot-pot Pinkies Pampered
Movement Hampered Like At Christmas
Ha-ha Isn't Life a Circus
Round in Circles Like the Archers
Always Stiff Or Always Starchy
Yes It's Happening and It's Fattening
And It's All That We Can Get Into the Show.

Smoky Broads and Smoky Windows in the Square
Come Come Charmer Come On Over For the Day
Disappearing Cocoa Forests Flash and Die
Fortunes Crumble All Demolished in the Bay.
