Two Alarm, Two Hose Fire this Morning

Posted by verne on April 21, 2007, at 15:51:34

I guess it was an *accident* but my neighbors were burning brush next to my nearly new wood fence in 20 mph winds that were blowing towards the fence. A fence they've told me they "hate" on several occasions.

When I could see the heat, flames and burning embers rising twenty feet into the air, I headed for the door and by the time I got to the hose, the fence was on fire. They were fighting the blaze from their side too.

I bag, compost, or give away my leaves, but they believe in two big bonfires a year - almost a religion around these parts. My daughter is coming over to take pictures.

I'm a little freaked after my *firefighting* experience. Flashbacks to my time on the railroad when we had to fight the occasional fire. None of us knew what we were doing and one fellow on the crew spent weeks in the hospital with burns.

The fence will probably survive a few more years but my nerves failed in minutes. I made a 4 alarm beer run.

That's terrible! Even if it really was an accident, I think it was still poor judgement on your neighbor's part to have their bonfire in those conditions.

I've experienced putting out a fire, once, years ago, and it is scary. Fire is like an alien life form, and I know I experienced a sort of terror that I don't think I can describe. Especially because I had only a garden hose, which it sounds like what you were using, too? It felt like pretty flimsy protection. (An arsonist started a fire in the basement of the flats I lived in. Thank goodness someone found it early enough, because the same arsonist burnt a couple of other buildings to the ground at the same time.)

I'm sorry that happened to you. I hope the beer helped.

verne, in a pinch, beer will put out a fire too.

I hope the neighbors will be more neighborly.

what's that about good fences making good neighbors

well, I think burning down fences kind of says what kind of idiots they were.
