Oh, you sound like me. I have to be VERY careful about potential nicknames, and even I can't foresee what I come up with.
My Daddy used to do it with me, and I do it with my pets and thankfully to a lesser extent with my son - where I confine it to odd endearments along the "my little cabbage" variety.
The one that most offended was with a very distinguished and elegant male dog who I insisted on calling something along the lines of "Mahly" or "Mawly". My husband would swear he'd roll his eyes at me and telepathically send a highly insulted "Mawly?!!" each time.
The most technically awful was "Geldyburger".

Sometimes just 'Boo boo', sometimes just 'kitty', and sometimes 'sweet baby kitty'. I tell everyone his name is 'kitty'.

Teddy the toy poodle is Teddy Bear, Baby, Sweety. My cat Sunny is Sunny Bunny. My youngest Daughter I called Barbie real name Alison as in VA Beach on vacation one year some punkers looked at her she was ver yuppy and said "Hey look at Barbie." First time I visited her here I bought Barbie stickers and put them on all her windows and car. And bought a Barbie suitcase for a child. We were dog sitting. Love Phillipa ps she was in Hilton Head. I also send her Barbie birthday Cards. Oh and that time we were visiting my husband put a big picture of Barbie on her computer as a screen saver.

My cat, Oliver (Ollie for short), often gets called 'Ollie-Bollie' - dunno why...babytalk, I guess.
Also, "fatty fatty fat-fat" Mean, perhaps, but quite accurate...and as everyone in my household - human and feline - is overweight in some way - we feel it lets him know he's part of the family.... ;-)

One of my cats (an adopted bottle baby) was originally named - not by me - Prince Charles, later shortened to Charles, then Charlie.
He's now Chuckie, like the doll. It fits better.
Sometimes I call him chuckers.
He's very strange. He's afraid of his tail.

Hm... I've known horses who spooked at their own f*rts, but never a cat who was afraid of his own tail...
I did have one, though, with a little white tip on his tail, and he used to pounce on it every time he caught sight of it in a dim light...
