My five year old saw them carrying around his body yesterday and he looked at me with a very serious/sad look and said,
" Mom??? Why didn't you tell me Santa claus died?"
The worst part is that I had secretly thought the Pope's outfit resembled a santa suit but of respect never said a word outloud.
Then my five year old said it for me..
Oh my.

Saint Nicholas of Christmas lore was a 4th Century bishop. Pope Saint Nicholas I lived about 500 years later. In centuries that followed, Nicholas II, III, IV and V held the papacy.

I never thought about this but it's an interesting connection.
it brings religion back into the Santa icon.
