What is the most......

Posted by rainbowbrite on March 27, 2005, at 15:56:49

....important thing in life, besides our health? Just wondering what people think...is it success? is it a family?
Is it happiness? but can you have complete happiness without success in otherwords, with alot of failure?
Is there an identity outside our families?
Is it how perfect we look on the outside, while containg our insides? OR Is it an individual choice?
If it is an individual thing, would anyone point me in the right direction to what they think should be important?

thanks

"besides our health"..
if you were ill..or had a terminal ill child..health would not be the most important thing..
i think it is a cross between happiness..(could be love , could be fame.) and lately ..a step above suicide...

jyl, are you alright? A step above suicide does not sound like a safe place. Do you want to talk about it?

And as for me, now that I get glimpses of it more than I used to, I can say that I think that happiness is the most important thing for me.
Family comes further down the list, but that's just for me.

I don't think there is anything that is 'the most important thing' to me. But there are lots of things that are important though.

Happiness.
Doing things that I believe are right or good (in spite of happiness or whatever).
Friends.
Philosophy :-)
Babble.

Can't think of anything else at the moment.

Thanks - I haven't followed the thread very faithfully, though I've read most of the posts.

It's intersting to me that a year ago, I wouldn't have listed happiness as the most important thing, but peace. And not world peace, I mean being at peace with yourself. I couldn't conceive of happiness then, just wanted the war going on my head to stop
and declare
peace

So what do you think about accepting defeat? Not doing what you know you can do because it seems to be difficult, more ifficult than is comfortable. Should we strive to be the best we can be or give up and find new paths? Im sick of feeling inferior, because maybe Im trying to be someone I am not an never will be.

(((pc)))

I think peace is a kind of happiness...

But not peace as in the absence of pain.
Peace as in not being at war with yourself or anyone else.

It is in that quiet moment that one can find happiness...

But then I largely think of happiness as an attitude that one can adopt (at times).

But I wish I had more of those 'good feelings' too...

For me, I guess I would say, along with good health, both physical and mental, that a sense of contentment and being, or striving to be, fulfilled is what is most important to me. Feeling content emotionally, financially (meaning I feel myself that I am not lacking - not that I want to be rich or even wealthy), with my chosen path in life, both in terms of my personal life choices and career choices (and, it's not about having a high paying job or climbing the ladder to success), and spiritually. Anyway, I hope that makes sense.

It makes alot of sense, I guess it has alot to do with fulfillment in general. And what a person enjoys....

if you are not enjoying what you do you may end up being miserable and ruining your life

I think so. But, a person can feel unfulfilled in one area of their life, but still feel generally contented I think. For example, a person may be in a bad relationship or not be enjoying their job anymore, but the person knows that they have choices and can make changes to those areas in order to feel fulfilled. So, since a person has the ability to make choices and changes, it can help alleviate or reduce any discontent or misery a person may be experiencing. I guess what I am trying to say is that we are never (or maybe almost never) completely stuck in what could be a miserable situation. Sometimes we may be temporarily stuck while we make plans, etc., but as long as we know that we have the ability to influence our future, then perhaps we can get through a difficult situation. I don't know, I am no Pollyanna or anything, but I suppose I am learning that if something in my life is bugging me then I am the only one who can change it or change how I look at it.

my family (with son at top of the list)

other attachments (perhaps because they are hard won for me)

doing my best to do what I should, to try to make my little corner of God's great world a little better than it might be without me

then less noble things like being smart and doing well. i know they shouldn't be important, but dagnabbit they are.

I think what is most important is having choices.

Someone posted that we all have choices, we are just uncomfortable until we are able to make the changes based on our choices.

I find that I am most unhappy when I have had my choices taken away from me. Some of them I handed over, while depressed in the past (and just making overall bad choices while "crazy") which have had the end result of taking away choices that would have be mine had I never "lost my mind"...

I think choices are the most important. And I guess it's because I don't have many that I value them so highly...

For me it's a sense of connectedness. Be that to another/other individuals, the world, or something (a purpose) greater than myself. But that's just my opinion.

Thanks everyone for all your input (nm)

For me, it's knowing that I made a difference. I've been struggling with how to phrase that, so it doesn't come across as arrogance or narcissism. But that's not it at all. However it has come to pass, I have arrived on this Earth with special gifts, those things that make me exactly me. And, to the extent that I have those gifts, I want to use them, to contribute to the lives of those around me.

E.g., I do volunteer legal work, helping people deal with "the system", because I've had to learn how to deal with it myself. I can save others from not getting a fair deal, because I already know how to get one.

Stuff like.

I want to cast a warm shadow on the world.
