Need some hope..prayers please..

Posted by jay on March 18, 2005, at 20:47:38

I normally don't 'beg', but it is a good way to learn humility. Anyhow, I have to pass a number of tests and take some courses to remain a certified social worker. I am actually taking an 'advanced' phase which will allow me to work with pretty much any client out there, in any situation. Some of my areas of interest include helping the homeless/people in poverty (I was there once!!); dual diagnosis clients with mental health and addiction issues (again have some experience in that area..first hand..heh.), and want to make society more equitable, compassionate, and very liberely humane. I am sick and tired of people looking down on the poor homeless folk, rushing around them in the big cities while they go get their 2.8 kids in their BMW and voting for selfish politicians just so they can have a tax break (they *don't* need.). Can I ask for a prayer..:-)

Thank you,
Jay

Wishing you all the best of success when you take your tests. You have chosen a self-less and noble profession, and I admire you for that. Good luck to you. I will keep fingers, toes and eyes crossed for you.

Take care,

Tamara

Best of luck, Jay,

You are not only choosing one of the toughest jobs there is, but some of the most difficult clients with whom to work. The bigger the challenge, the greater the reward. Many of those clients just need a little hope when everyone, including themselves, has given up on them. They'll be fortunate to have you in their corner.

You guys are really my only support group. I don't go to therapy or anything like that. It's really a job, just like any other, but these social issues are close to my heart. Being poor is a massive strike against anyone, and with all the wealth we have in the 'industrialized' countries, nobody really should go without. Neither should the dying AIDS patient; the abused child; the confused teen who has run away from home, etc. I know, I may sound idealistic, but I feel that is my purpose in life...to look out for the poor, downtroden underdog. Just like anyone who wants to be a firefighter to save lives; a paramedic; a doctor or nurse, etc. Plus, the million great souls who give not only in volutary work, but donate money as well.

Peace and the best be with you,
Jay (p.s. your encouraging thoughts will be with me..)

Jay,
While I share your socio-political stance on the distribution of wealth in this county, being born with a silver spoon does not insure happiness. Wealthy adolescents have uncommonly high rates of suicide, anorexia and bulemia, chemical misuse and other self-abusing behaviors. It's as if priviledge is some sort of handicap to building character. There's something to be said to being raised like you, where your hard work is the main reason you transcend the limitations of your environment. See, you never thought you'd feel so fortunate to be poor. : ) Toph

Hey Toph,

Yes, you are very correct that depression and mental illness crosses all financial boundaries. Not that I want to exclude someone who has wealth, but there is such a big link between homelessness, drug use, and mental illness. It's getting VERY bad in Toronto, when us Canadians are *supposed* to be good people who look after one-another. The truth is, though, I have many friends from all over the world who work in the area of social policy, social work and justice, and borders don't mean much. There are people who care...this board is a good example, and tons of giving, heartfelt people around the world. Anyhow..sorry for the long answer...but yes, I do completely agree with you. And yes..I will say this as many times as needed..I *am* a very lucky person. I have a roof over my head, a clean warm bed, lots to eat, wonderful childhood, but this depression and anxiety tends to blind you from these things. Well...back to *another* med experiment..lol.

Best,
Jay

Jay,

If I ever needed a social worker, I would like you to be my social worker :-)

Hopefully I won't need one though!

Anyway, Toronto is a loooong way away........
