Hey, good for you..that is really great to hear people continue their education in the face of this hell-ish mental illness. I am sorta with you, as I am applying for my second grad degree in clinical counselling. (More money and time for me to waste...yaaayyy..) I am hoping to be permenently unemployment-proof..lol. But I also like what I am doing, as I am sure you do too, so that is a plus. *Luckily*, for once in my dang life, my Depression may help me get into this program. They have a sort-of 'affirmative action' program for people with psychiatric disabilities, which will fast-track me.

Good luck!

Best,
Jay

Now I have to wait on the next one...
And if that doesn't work out
Apply to some more places in October.

They don't know what they missed out on.

:(

Sorry. Hopefully this happened so that when you do get in, it will be exactly the right place, and you won't have to agonize over deciding.

How's that for spin?

Yeah...

On the plus side that one only offered a 9 month living stipend wheras the next offers a 12 month living stipend.

That one makes you apply at the end of every year to see whether they will offer you funding for the next. There are no guarantees. The next one guarantees funding for 5 years.

The only two pluses that I can think of... I shall reflect on them.

I'm really sorry Alexandra_k, that sux.

The Southern hemisphere would have been really lonely without you, but I had all my fingers and toes crossed which kinda made working and walking a pain =0)

Try not to worry, though I know it's hard. You'll get the one that's meant to be, when it's meant to be. Life can be really annoying that way.

Lots of love and warm wishes from wet windy Sydney.

Oh Alex, it's their loss for sure....

Sorry you didn't get in.
I know that has to be a let down.

thinking of you on St. Patty's day....

I bark out a "hi"
with soda bread stuck in my throat
and the lingering after taste of Jamison's
cornbeef burning on the stove
and every piece of green clothing I own on my body
I say take the high road....

but for real, I am so sorry you didn't get what you wanted.
as I said earlier....
It's their loss...
my green best to you

my loss as well. would have been great to have you in my hemisphere... you're currently teaching, right? Are you working with Frank Jackson? he's much admired in the States, though for reasons that would make him retch...

sending you good thoughts, philosophical and otherwise

Thanks everyone. I still have one other US application in, so I haven't written off the US just yet. Just didn't get in to my first choice is all.

Zeugma - Nah, I'm not working with Frank. I got a summer research scholarship to study over there last year. Had to pick which project to work on and chose 'delusions' (Martin Davies - who has done work on 'theory theory vs stimulation theory of folk-psychology)over 'naturalising consciousness' (Frank Jackson). It was a hard decision to make. But I thought I wanted to get into phil of psych more than just focusing on traditional phil of mind and it was a great opportunity to find that out for sure.

Got to have a couple of discussions with him though. Showed him an honours level essay critiquing the direct reference theory of ch 2 'Philosophy of Mind and Cognition'. I was terrified of meeting him - but he was really nice and friendly. Said that ch 2 was problematic and they were revising that for the next edition :-)

If I don't get in to the US then I hope to get back there... But I think the next funding round is in October to start round January of next year. 3 year program instead of 5 and no course work - so I'd have to get straight into another thesis...
