motivation

Posted by Penny on July 2, 2003, at 13:12:40

I am having a TERRIBLE problem with motivation and procrastination. I suppose I have always (as long as I can remember) had a problem with procrastination - certainly all throughout school and so far in my career - but it's really becoming a huge problem for me now.

My therapist recommended the book "The Now Habit", which seems to be pretty good. The central theme is to change your thinking from "I have to" to "I choose to".

The funny part is, there's all of these exercises at the beginning of the book that the author wants you to do, but I don't have the motivation to do even those! How does one motivate oneself to become motivated???

Feeling utterly unmotivated and experiencing a great deal of despair...

I'm leaving in a minute for the airport, so I can't say much... but I know what you mean. I have the motivation problems as well, always have. I'm usually pretty good at forcing myself to do stuff despite my utter lack of motivation, but it sucks. It's like, it doesn't prevent me from doing things, just prevents me from wanting to do anything!

I made a sign based on the book The Now Habit and put it beside my desk on the wall at work. It says:

I don't have to, I CHOOSE TO
I can take ONE SMALL STEP
I am not perfect, I AM HUMAN

Now if I can only get myself to believe it.

Wow - it's pouring down rain outside - remnants of TS Bill. :-b

Just waiting for 4 p.m. to get here - I've actually gotten a *little* bit accomplished today and have managed to stay awake most of the day - quite a feat for me. I'm leaving at 4 because I have some photos for work that I need to get developed, so it's a good reason to skip out early!

I've always had procrastination problems, but my motivation problems have been MUCH worse in recent years. Sometimes I think it is worse from my meds. Who knows.

I don't remember too much about what it was like, in my head, before meds, so I can't say if it's really worse due to that or due to age...I don't know. I don't remember at what point my head got so screwed up, but I really can't remember not thinking this way.

You'd think that I'd learn after so many years, but it gets worse and worse.

And it's not just things I don't want to do...it's things I do want to do but just don't have the energy and can only once-in-a-while make myself.

Ugh.
