I love the library. It is a place to be around people but no pressure to interact much. And we are all engaged in similar endeavors.

Hey, why not try the library for logging on the internet to visit Babble. It will get you out of the house, but you can still connect here for support.

I have been to the library almost every day for the past 2 weeks. Just because it is somewhere to go other than in my house. So I feel like I've actually done more than sat around my house reading for the whole of this year.

You could also try going to a quiet shopping mall, if you have a quiet one near by. Sit in a food area, and just people watch. It can be very amusing.

Sometimes I take my checkbook and my bills to the library and do them there, because I can't seem to get them done at home, especially when my place is a disaster area, which it is sometimes.

"when my place is a disaster area, which it is sometimes."

Well, thats sign that you've really come on some Noa.. I remember two years ago (thought it could be more!) you said your place was *always* a disaster area!! Now its only sometimes! :o)

Hmmm.. I wonder if my place will *ever* stop being a disaster area.. the gas man can't read our meter cos you can no longer get to it cos of the mess!!

LOL, Nikki.

Well, I moved in the past year, into my own place, so I had a honeymoon period for a while, during which is was so nice and clean in here. Now it is a disaster area. When I moved, I got rid of a lot of junk. A lot of the old, unopen mail from my depressed times was just so old there was nothing to do but toss it, anyway. So that helped.

Now, though, I have resumed the terrible habit of dumping stuff on the kitchen table when I come in, so it is piled high with mounds of this and that. Also, I have been getting the daily paper, which is too much--I can't keep up with reading it anyway, and then I just have papers everywhere and on recycling day I scramble to gather it up and put in in paper bags. But there is so much of it that I can't carry it all out on the morning of recylcing, unless I make the time to take two trips, but usually I am rushing to get to work (late). So the newspapers just accumulate all over the place. I am going to cancel the daily and just get the Sunday, I think.

But it isn't just nespapers, although I think once there is one thing cluttering everything, it becomes contagious and I get messy with other stuff, too. Maybe it's time for me to visit flylady.com. I had been receiving her emails but cancelled them because I got overwhelmed because they were way too numerous and I didn't like getting emails trying to sell me things. But maybe I'll just visit the website for some reminders.

I also just started reading "Organizing from the inside out"--we'll see if that helps.

Of course, one thing that would help is getting off this darn computer for a little while!

you guys are funny-thanks (nm)

I know that feeling.. I managed to clear a path to the bed the other day, but things so quickly seem to creep into that space... And I don;t know where to start in getting totally tidied up.. We have NO storage space here, and hubby won't put all his toys into storage.. we just have boxes and boxes everywhere.. and stuff and stuff piled on the boxes!!!

I keep saying more room will help.. but I have this snekaing suspicion more room will simply mean more mess!!! *l*

Good luck ;)

What’s wrong with organized chaos and clutter...lol. I told therapist that I wouldn’t be in again until I totally get my surroundings in order. Yes, my place is a mess too, but I’m finding the cleaner I get it the more organized and "better" I feel.

I wonder if Green peace or another "clean " org would help with this mess...lol

organisation, messy homes and ultimate solution...

When I read Noa saying her home is a disaster *only* some of the time, I cracked up. My home's always a disaster. I've seriously entertained the idea of becoming a nomad like the Bedouins. I figured it would be the ultimate solution for me.

But then I started thinking - how would I take my music collection? What about all my books? What about my large shell & stone collection? Would my cats think traipsing along after me a good way to live? How could I be certain I wouldn't miss my Futurama & Farscape episodes?

So I guess it's back to wasting time looking for something I had used earlier in the day & now have no idea where it's gone to.

That is what I call "The Empty Room Theory". My sister has a similar theory about flat surfaces. The empty room theory says that no matter how many additional empty rooms you acquire, you will also acquire a corresponding amount of stuff to fill it up with.

I came up with this (and I'm sure I'm not the first to do so) because for a long time, I lived in a small studio apartment. I actually kept it quite tidy because there was no place to hide things, but also because back then I had so little stuff because I had so little money. So when I moved to a bigger apartment, I thought it would retain its spacious feel. But it didn't take long for it to start filling up with stuff. Now I have an additional room, and yep, it is full of stuff, too. Ad infinitum--is that the right term?

I discoverd last year in talking to my sister about messes, etc. that she had a similar theory of Flat Surfaces. She said that in her house, all the flat surfaces get covered with stuff. At one point, she thought about buying another table, but decided against it because she felt that it would not solve any problems--it would just accumulate more stuff!!

I've gone even beyond her flat surface issue because in my place, the flat surface rule doesn't just refer to all the tables and furniture tops that are covered with messy mounds of stuff, it also includes the floor, LOL!!

LOL--I waste a lot of time searching for stuff--it is all here---somewhere. Sometimes I find stuff months after I needed it.

Organized clutter would be a big improvement over what I have right now. It is total chaos.

Hey in terms of the nomad thing, there are plenty of battery operated devices--tv, etc. :- ) Also, the cell phone is the perfect device for a nomad (I have seen Bedouin women in traditional dress out tending the flocks, talking on the cell phone. At first, it looked like a surprising combo, but when I thought about it, it made a lot of sense to me--like the two cultures had come to a harmonic convergence of sorts).

When I was in financial straits, I used to fantasize about getting rid of all but a few essential belongings and living in my car (I knew I wouldn't ever do it, of course). The thought always made me feel a bit free--who needs all this stuff?

We got a bit far afield from your original topic, so I wanted to ask how you are doing? It is Saturday--are you feeling like stepping out at all?

I am going to go out today--at my friend's intitative, we are planning to find a movie to see. There are actually some good ones to see lately, unlike the dearth of films during the past couple of years.

Well, that may be too much b/c I don't think I'd ever get access to my music, books, cat etc., but sort of govt. or civic group should help me clean the house.

Actually, what's funny, is that when I get manic the worst thing I do is over clean, which as doc has stated to me is better than prior to being on mood stabilizers, going on wild spending sprees to fill up "flat surfaces” I think that theory would prove to be very "real" in a lab...lol

Sorry, I should've said something before, having deputy administrators is even more complicated than I thought. I'm trying to work this out, but until then, it's just me again...
