Posted by LiLi80 on March 6, 2002, at 6:45:43

Ok i dont sleep much. I stay up all night when i am maniac. The next day I crash badly. I sleep the day away. I go from no sleep to all sleep. I dont know how to fix it. My meds are doing this to me, but I cant stop them. I have never been maniac before this weird for me. I stay up all night and then go to Dunkin's at 5 am. This is a ritual now. Ok just babbling now.......

Yes it is. Pity- it would make life a lot easier if it was optional rather than essential! Staying up all night and sleeping all day also excludes you from everyday life and ordinary routine (since the vast majority of people are doing the opposite).

Hope you get the meds sorted and things settle down.

You sleep pattern can affect your depression and vice versa. A more regular sleep pattern as well as regular eating times help your health in general, including your mental health.
I think you ought to talk to your doc about it, because it could hinder your recovery.

Sometimes antidepressants can trigger mania or hypomania in people who have a vulnerability to bipolar disorder. If you are suddenly having mania and not wanting to sleep, etc., since starting medication, you need to go back to your pdoc immediately. You may need an adjustment of your dose, or to change ADs or to combine the AD with a mood stabilizer.

Hi,

I know there's more to your post than the 5 am Dunkin' Donuts reference, but I had to laugh. When I wasn't sleeping and living in Manhattan a few years ago, I used to arrive at the Krispy Kreme in Chelsea at about 4 am for a hot fresh donut. It was like I waited the whole night for it. Being manic has it's appeals...Sometimes I feel like I'm moving too fast to really see anything and then I stop and smell the donuts. Complete and sticky focus. Yummmmmmmmmmm.

Getting off the sleeping-by-day and awake-at-night cycle is tough. Try taking a sleep aid one night top get back on track. Works for me. Tylenol PM is good. I prefer Valerian, but sid's doctor had told her it didn't mix well with some ADs.

Ask the 12 dead cats who (in an experiment) were deprived 48 hours of sleep and all croaked. I realize, of course, that we are not cats, but what the heck: MEOW!

Keith Richards, "Monkey Man" of the Rolling Stones, made the claim recently that he had stayed awake for nine straight days. No reason given. No reason desired.
