Salutations/Letter Endings

Posted by elizabeth31 on October 22, 2009, at 22:40:59

I was just curious how other people's therapists choose to end their letters via email? I was thinking of the generic ones that quickly come to mind such as:
* sincerely
* take care
* best wishes
* kind regards
* yours sincerely

maybe this is a silly question...but i always pay attention to little details like these and was just curious of other's expereinces...thanks!

Old T -Nothing, or her name. With new T - she doesn't email. I hear her secretary using a typewriter, no computer in sight.

Just a space and his name.

He doesn't even hit return to go to a new line.

I fussed at him about signing first and last names, so now he's careful just to use his first name.

Even so his emails are stiff, and I'd prefer not to email him.

My t/pdoc does not give any salutations in email that I know of. I've only had a few emails with him, though, and they didn't get into personal stuff. There is, at least some of the time, a boilerplate legal disclaimer (if this is received by someone other than the intended recipient...) that is longer than the message he writes.

Elizabeth, I note that your wording left it unclear what your t uses. Are the listed examples terms you _wish_ your therapist used, or does s/he use them? If it's a wish, I understand your wish for something more personal as the ending; I wish for it, too.

Have never emailed her or she I. I dont even have her email address. (things fell apart with the last T. I had-- I blame it on email-- so it gives my stomach a *jump* to even think of corresponding through email-- don't want to risk things getting ruined again)

I wonder what people did 20+ years ago before internet?? did they just call their T. instead? I wonder if there was less contact out of session years ago-- maybe the internet has, for some clients, enabled more contact with T.

My therapist uses a combination of endings which was probably why I was curious as to if this was normal or not. Typically, I think for most of his emails he sends me from his office are signed : "Best, Dr. X" he then i assume because its automatically set up for his work email settings includes at the end of the email: his name, formal title, address, phone number, email, and website

Sometimes, he doesn't end or even start with anything (usually its "Hi" and he's used "I hope this helps' at the end. My favorite is when he says something like "I look forward to seeing you on X" or when he wrote me an informal message about something unrelated to therapy with me, and he used a "smiley face" at the end--that made me happy :)

Anyways, this wasn't a very loaded topic question I posted, I was just curious and appreciate the feedback. The only thing I was suprised to see by some of the responses wass that some people's therapist's used their first names instead of referring to themselves as a title 'Dr X" I couldn't imagine ever calling my therapist by his first name and found that interesting. i also should note whenever I write him, i always start by saying Dear Dr. X:, and used to always sign "Sincerely" but now just sign my first name as i feel more comfortable with being a little more casual, but i still always address him formally.

Hmm, that's interesting. I can't imagine ever calling my therapist Dr. X, though she has her doctorate. Different strokes, huh?
