My favorite part of Thanksgiving

Posted by daisym on November 23, 2005, at 10:18:59

I think it can be bonding in therapy to share a little about what you each do on holidays -- gives us a little peek into the lives of our therapists. And perhaps to talk about what you are thankful for.

Likewise -- I'd like to share that here.

My favorite part of Thanksgiving is getting up early, making cinnamon rolls and watching the parade. Even as old as my boys are (and yes, they all arrived home last night, you should see the living room! ) they still watch it with me. Bulwinkle is my favorite balloon, and Dumbo.

Among the things I'm most thankful for this year is Babble. I truly don't know what I would have done last June without you guys. Actually I think that most weeks. Thank you for giving so much, so consistently. Isn't it strange how important people I've never met are to me?

I love you all. Happy Thanksgiving!
Daisy

Great idea Daisy!

My favorite part of Thanksgiving is similar to yours. We get up early to go downtown to watch the Thanksgiving parade. I make hot chocolate, and my husband gets bagels. My daughter thinks the colder is it, the better. Not me. It's snowing now, and they predict wind chills below zero tomorrow morning. She's excited, more cuddling. I'm thinking, "maybe daddy can take you this year."

But the parade has become a tradition and I look forward to the goofiness of it all.

Did your therapist share what he was doing? I don't think mine would, although she did ask me where I was going and what I was doing.

Parade sounds fun but cold! It is 74 here today, sunny and beautiful. I think I'd rather have snow.

Yes -- he shared. He is staying home and his kids are coming over. He said he has to make the stuffing and help with the turkey -- I asked if he was doing the cooking. We even talked about board games our families play.

Not that he let me get away with no work -- "are you worried I am going someplace far away? Or, are you worried I won't think of you over the long Holiday?" But these days it is much easier to answer these questions because I have no pride left at all. I made him promise to be there Monday and he said I could call him if I needed to.

My homework is that I have to pick MY favorite kind of potato to make, instead of just making the kids' favorite. He said it was another way to practice getting what I wanted, instead of always being OK with what the other guy wants. We compromised on I could make both types, which is unnecessary, but at least this way everyone is happy. He teased me about this, saying he doubted the boys would die of disappointment if they didn't get mashed potatoes... I told him it's a mom thing. :)

That was a great idea daisy,

In the past I've taken my daughter's to a movie - girl time, we have so little of it. This year they've both been to see Harry Potter, so my husband, son, and I are going in the morning. Then we'll go home, we'll all cook, set a pretty table, enjoy each others company, have a nice meal together (Two of our kids don't eat turkey, so I make steak too.), and then my daughter's and I, or my daughter's and my husband will see a movie. We'd all go together except our youngest is only 2, and he can't do movies yet.

I love this tradition, even if it is kind of odd, it gives us time together and we laugh and have fun. And it's something none of their friends do, so it's interesting for them.
