How do you guys ever manage to work??

Posted by pinkeye on May 24, 2005, at 22:53:43

So, I think I answered someone's question long back about how I managed to work while doing this regressive therapy. (think it was Whirlpool).

But now I am stuck myself. I haven't been working well for the past 4 months. Lagging behind so much in work. All my time is being taken up by babble, soul searching, coping up with stress, and just blind numbness.

What should I do? Just hang in and get through this? Or shut it all off and go back to work?

My kind of work takes intense concentration ability, and being able to take charge of things - and this regressing into childhood puts me into so much of difficulty with it. Plus all this worries about Going back to India/issues about my father/losing my exT/stress with my husband/plus my regular arthritis pain.

How do you guys manage all this kind of stress and complications?

If I were you, I'd go back to therapy with a good T, and work all of this out. Sounds like you're drifting in many directions, and could use some help with direction. (sounds familiar to me!) Then you'll be ready to go back to work and give it your full attention. What do you do btw? I'm an artist, who hasn't been able to do art for about 2 years now because of my distractibility.

I am goign to therapy with a T (quite good). But it is not enough. I see her for 45 minutes once a week, and that is mostly enough - but though she has some great insights into my emotions, it is not enough to give me some direction and guide me. She actually adapts the strategy of letting me do all the figuring it out, and I think that is pretty good for the most part, since that is how I really grow. But I get confused quickly and much more than I can handle and get overwhelmed. Most of my therapy actually gets done in babble nowadays.

And there is no way to increase the frequency of the sessions because she doesn't see patients other than half days and that too only 2 days a week, and she is pretty much fully booked for those 2 half days.

I am a software person.

afraid i can't answer your question but i'm right there with you. my therapy has been so difficult, i've had two hospitalizations in two weeks, i keep getting tons of 'flashbacks' during working hours. i'm worried about my suicidal ideation or worried how i'm acting infront of others. my work has suffered greatly. hard to focus, concentrate. my mind goes many other (bad) places and that shakes me up for hours. my work is way behind and even the day to day, things i'm supposed to 'manage', i can't coordinate things like i used to.

i just had my annual review today. i normally get all excellent or very good's. today was a coupld goods and mostly N's...needs improvement. :(
my boss has subtly suggested i go to part time "since that's basically what i am doing"-boss's words. i told him i can't either financially or emotionally, work is one stable thing in my life.

anyway, there are days i wish i could just quit and get unemployment or disability for the next 4 months till all this junk clears up a bit.

sorry i went off about my own problems, but you are definately NOT alone.
i am struggling greatly with work right now.

best of luck to you. i'm sure we can figure this out, and get back in the game...just time.

I must admit, I don't get much done because I am so consumed with therapy. I hope therapy will help me in the long run, so I will make up for lack of not getting anything done now. At least my husbands hopes so, he is getting tired of doing the dishes and laundry. lol

In my case, back when I was doing therapy I had to be in a space that screamed ‘work!’, and to do nothing but work when I was there (except very occasional days when Freecell won out over work).

Now therapy is over and I’m in a slightly different working environment that means working at home a lot, and I get much less done. I won’t be back in the classroom for a few months, and I miss the routine of teaching.

Being able to focus on work despite all the problems is something that doesn’t come easily. But it’s essential, especially because it can provide some respite from the agony.

Is your job challenging enough? I know you’re very clever, and I wondered if your job might have become a bit dull if you’ve been doing it for a while. Maybe it would help if you took on new challenges at work. That might sound unthinkable if you have a lot of emotional issues to deal with, but it might help distract you. Or maybe that’s no help at all… Just a suggestion anyway.

I partition things and try to do them at the right times. I have time for work, and time for husband, and time for friends. And then time for "me." But when I'm depressed it's hard to focus on work. The thing is that when I throw myself into a project, it actually helps distract me from anxiety and ruminations. As long as I can get over the hurdle and START something, I finish it well.
