Momma and the Meaning of Life

Posted by Susan47 on April 24, 2005, at 14:46:34

I'm reading this book by Irvin Yalom, reading about Paula, and he says this, talking about some recent geriatric research, "....cantankerous patients who are paranoid, vigilant, and assertive tend to live longer."
I will probably live to be 140.

He is talking about my grandmother. She's 105 and the meanest, most cantankerous, most unloveable old cow you could ever hope to avoid. To die would be a good thing for too many people and she's just too mean to do it.

And you all thought I was a *nice* person...

That's why I keep telling my mother that she's going to live forever and she'd better be careful with her money.

She thinks it's because I see her as all powerful.

But really she's too stubborn to die.

Not that she's all the things you mentioned. She's a bunch of other things entirely. But if you were to separate all her qualities, stubbornness would stretch from her toes at least up to her shoulders.

Hi Susan,

My mother isn't paranoid, but stubborn and assertive. Add angry in to that mix.

Who's actually read this book? The library's copy that I borrowed had page 200 missing. And it's been in the system for five years. Apparently, according to the librarian, nobody's complained. It makes you wonder.
The Hungarian Cat Curse... what did you get out of that? That was an incredible chapter, I loved it.

i too am reading this, and am at the end of the last chapter. so far i like it, but i had the same problem with page 200...perhaps it was intentional? or a misprint? it really disturbed me because the end of chapter five was something i REALLY wanted to know about.

I had the library request a loan from another system, which I received in paperback versus the original hardcover and page 200 was there. You missed nothing. About two sentences, a simple reiteration of his story. He's an expressive writer, at the risk of becoming a bit long-winded though, at times. I'll bet he's like that IRL, really expansive and full of himself, not really humble but playing the part. Oops, personal guess only. Had a bit of fun with that one.

i have had the same thoughts about the author, though when he gets into fiction, he is very descriptive. just finished the last chapter and liked it for the most part. talking animals don't do much for me, though. haha. so you're saying there wasn't any resolution to the previous chapter? and they were never honest with each other about the tape? that's too bad. i wanted Dr. Lash to eat his words a bit. As a psychotherapist myself, i was deeply disturbed by his behavior. but i have little experience as of yet, and perhaps i'll learn it was more realistic than i thought.

Exactly what part of Dr. Lash's behaviour were you disturbed about? Which little tidbit grabbed you the most? I'm barely able to remember the details, refresh me on what you know. If you have time etc.
