hurricanes

Posted by rayww on September 24, 2004, at 23:10:15

What is it like for those living on the eastern seaboard? I watch the
news several times a day. I find myself caught up in the events
happening in Haiti, Florida, and the islands, and feel so helpless and
almost guilty that I can't be of more help. When I get depressed I say
to myslef, "life is so hard to deal with", but in the same sentence I
also add, "but I have it so good and so much to be grateful for. My
problems are nothing compared to those in the hurricane path." We have
agriculture colapse to deal with, but at least we still have agriculture.
We had a bumper crop. Our cattle are well cared for and healthy, even
though we can't sell them. Why is so much of life tied to money? Why
can't life just go on, maximizing our resources, without money? Because
money is the God of this world. Riches should be used for the benefit
of others. Why are there so many selfish hoarders in the world? Why is
there so much inequality? If only everyone could unselfishly give
their excess to the poor. After all, once our basic needs are taken
care of, what more does a person need?

At any rate, how are you doing? I pray God's will be done and lives
will be spared and the hurricanes will be used to fulfill God's
purposes in your countryside, just as the border closure is refining us.

prayer for those in the path of hurricane Jeanne

this whirling vortex of air and water has the power to erase those in her path.
We have been hit by such tremendous power this year.
It's awesome.
My friend's father sat through hurricane Francis with the wind shaking his house at night for 10 hours.

To sit, in the dark, and listen to your house shake for 10 hours....

I'd rather be in Vermont.

To have no: water, lights, toilet, money, food...
for 9 days is quite a hardship but to lose your life in a mud slide...
well it's over.

Jeanne has been responsible for so many deaths already she's quite a force to meet.
I am watching and waiting.
She will make land fall tonight or on Sunday.
I offer a prayer to those who are in her path.
Jai

I grew up in a house without water, lights, or indoor plumbing. A friend just returned from two years on a remote island with none of the above. Both were wonderful experiences and are good memories. We have created a monster lifestyle in America that has made us far too vulnerable in a way that we weren't in the old days, doing things the old ways. It is good to remember how things were done back then. Necessity has always been the mother of invention. Perhaps it is time to look at new ways of doing old things. I look forward to the inventions of the future, and hope things get less expensive as they become easier to manage, more simplistic, less junk, more love. The monster greed is destroying any hope of a more simple existance as it rages out of control. Greed is like the hurricane, bearing down in destruction. What's the antidote to greed? Thinking of others first. So, my prayer in the midst of the hurricane is that people will think of others first. That will calm the storm.

I totally agree with your analysis of the situation.
How did people live in Florida without power?
It's way too hot during the summer.
But I looked at all the other years of hurricanes and this year is unusual.
A few hurricanes in years past have hit this particular location.
Well my thoughts are with these people tonight.

Of course, if you look at the devastation a hurricane brings to those who live "simpler" lives of necessity, it makes technology look not half bad.

A hurricane bearing down on a community of brick and wood houses full of people with the resources to flee isn't a pleasant thought. The property loss is immense.

A hurricane bearing down on a community with the simplest sort of homes, no steel reinforcement, no computer simulated hurricane model designed homes, and no resources to flee is total devastation in human loss.

If you take away even more technology in the form of satellite pictures and hurricane planes, you're left with people enjoying a pleasant day with no thought of fleeing caught unaware as the hurricane destroys their homes and lives.

Technology ain't half bad. We're lucky to live in a part of the world where a natural disaster causes far fewer deaths than if the same disaster hit an area that has less money and less resources. Check the death toll as hurricanes hit the US as opposed to some of the poorer countries or to similar hurricanes in the good old days.

We may be vulnerable in ways we weren't then, but we are less vulnerable in many important ways too.

There is no one who loves technology more that I (and you) do, but how do we use it to help the people of Haiti?
