sin and personality changing meds

Posted by sherwm on October 25, 2003, at 6:39:50

How do I convince teenage children that the meds they take to control their bipolar (lithium, wellbutrin, topa, etc..) are not a sin because they chnage their personality???

I tell them no pot, etoh, rec drugs bc it is wrong to alter your mind and yet each day i give them a med that does just that!!!

They cannnot separate drugs that mold you into good behavior and those that do not...HOW DO I EXPLAIN????

When I was hospitalized for clinical depresssion (bipolar) and religious OCD, I went though a phase where I thought it was a sin to take my meds. The hospital chaplain pointed out to me that off my meds, I was really of no use to anybody - that if I wanted to serve God I needed to be psychologically healthy.

Another tactic might be to liken drugs for bipolar to insulin for diabetes or chemo for cancer - emphasise the medical relatity of their sickness.

Good luck!

I think it is important to point out that pot and other such drugs are illegal, while prescribed drugs are 100% legal. If you truly need a drug to help you, then it can not be a sin (unless it is an illegal drug). It becomes a sin when one starts abusing drugs (prescription or illegal). There is a huge difference between telling your children not to smoke pot, and giving the say, Prozac for a psychological disorder. Bless you.

One helpful thing might be referring to prescribed medications as that ---"MEDICATIONS" and anything mood altering that is not prescribed for that individual and "DRUGS"
