diet for bipolar 2

Posted by Iowamoomoo on March 23, 2014, at 16:37:05

Has anyone tried a low carb way of eating to help with mood swings? If so any feedback? I am pre diabetic and this diabetes board told me that carbs can raise blood sugar up and down and cause mood swings even in non diabetic. I am trying a low carb high fat way of eating and it has seemed to help some but I've not been able to stick with it long periods. So any input on if diet has helped moods or supplements please please please let me know

This quote is from an article by Michael Ellsberg in Forbes Magazine:

Dr. Hoffman told me there is mounting clinical evidence linking moodswings to blood sugar issues, and that in his experience bipolar patients respond well to cutting out refined sugar, and coffee and alcohol (which affect blood sugar) from their diets. You should stop eating refined sugar altogether, and stop drinking alcohol and coffee, he told me.

I SOOOOO agree with this article! Including white flour stuff, sugars, chips, ask junk food, including diet drinks sigh aspartame, I'm on day 5 of no caffeine free diet Pepsi and don't feel different but I'm sure it's better for me not to drink it. I'm trying once again low carbs and pretty much no sweets and junk food and today is tougher then yesterday but I restarted Risperdal last night anyways so won't be able to tell what is working and what isn't, ahhh well story of my life LoL

Have you tried a diet high in protein? Some carbs are necessary, but you don't want to overdo it with the carbs. Everything in moderation. A diet high in protein will give you that sustained energy without the mood swings. Some carbs may be okay. Also incorporate a variety of veggies into your diet with the protein. You actually need a balanced diet with protein, some carbs, and veggies. As far as I know, there is no established diet for bipolar disorder. However, fish oil capsules and borage oil can help with mood. You want to get a 1:1 ratio of the fatty acids. For example, I take 1,500mg of fish oil in the morning followed by 1,300mg of borage oil (GLA) a half hour later. Seems to help with mood. Are you on medication for the bipolar disorder? Sometimes, a little medication is necessary for the mood swings. My doctor gave me Lamictal. It's one of the more safer mood stabilizers. I also take Risperdal, which can help with manic symptoms. Also, Abilify is often given for bipolar patients. You'd have to talk with your doctor to find out what works best for you. I wish you a lot of luck, and don't give up.

You're pre-diabetic? Are you working with a nutritionist who can help you choose the right diet? Diet is very important for diabetic patients. A high carb diet could potentially land you into some trouble down the road, especially if the carbs are mainly simple carbohydrates which turn to sugar in the body. You might benefit from eating more whole grains and delete the refined carbohydrates. But like I said, you might have to get advice from a nutritionist who can help you find a diet that meets your energetic needs without causing the diabetes to become worse. Eating protein and veggies won't give you those mood swings like the carbs will, that is, if the carbs are simple carbohydrates, such as white bread, cookies, pastries, some breakfast cereals, pancakes, waffles. There are healthier alternatives out there. You just have to look for them. Good luck!
