the miracle of potato starch

Posted by g_g_g_unit on February 20, 2014, at 22:54:35

I would encourage everyone to take a look at this: http://www.longecity.org/forum/topic/68454-the-microbiome-and-brain-enhancement/

I'm on day 3 of four tablespoons a day. It isn't a cure, but I feel calmer, more focused, less bloated, and my sleep quality has improved.

I started taking potato starch flour last fall, and, like you, it made me feel calmer and improved my sleep. Resistant starch improves insulin sensitivity, which is a good thing for most people, but not for me, because I have hypoglycemia. The potato starch flour would drive my blood glucose down, making me feel tired, so I stopped taking it after about six weeks.

A couple weeks ago I started taking the prebiotic GOS (galacto-oligosaccharides). I've taken FOS before, but it did nothing for me. GOS, like potato starch flour, makes me feel calmer and improves my sleep, and it doesn't drive down my blood glucose. I have to order it from England from a company called Bimuno.

Prebiotics get a brief mention in this cool cartoon about the human microbiome.

Interesting, thanks Hugh. I tend towards hypoglycemia as well, but have noticed that I get fuller quicker and can go for longer periods without eating .. I wonder why.

I do feel a little more tired, though it's welcome over my typical strung-out state. I guess I'm just so impressed because nearly every supplement has either made me worse, or offered no improvement; I shudder to think how much money I've wasted over the years.

The Bimuno thing sounds good, and I was wondering if there might be a viable alternative to take the PS .. but it's a pity because the PS is so cheap.

No reason for you to give up potato starch, especially since you're feeling so much better on it. It might be a good idea to start taking inulin in addition to potato starch. The rats in this study were fed a diet of both prebiotics, and it was found that they worked synergistically. Maybe adding a third prebiotic, GOS, would be even more helpful.

Thanks for the tip. Unfortunately, money's tight right now so I'll have to stick with the starch itself. I've been monitoring things more closely and ingesting 2 tablespoons of PS on an empty stomach does indeed drop my blood sugar .. I'll try taking it with food and see what happens.

It might be making me tired .. but I suffer from so much fatigue anyway, and would happily trade that for relief from anxiety.

It's a pity iherb doesn't carry any prebiotics (as far as I can tell). Shipping is cheap, so I could just throw it in when I order my other stuff.

iherb sells inulin. I doubt you'd find it as effective as potato starch, but if you combined the two, you might be able to get by on a lower dose of potato starch.

The Bimuno Original Prebiotic Powder Triple Pack (3 for the price of 2) is $60, plus $11 for shipping to the US (I'm converting from British pounds). That's a three-month supply. I've only been taking it for three weeks, but so far I consider it one of the best bargains I've ever found.

Acacia (gum arabic) is another prebiotic sold by iherb. Acacia senegal is supposed to be superior to Acacia seyal.

I use it as one of the ingredients in gluten free recipes, and it is found in many gluten free products such as breads, pastries, tortillas, crusts. I did not know it had any kind of therapeutic value.

That's a pretty good deal. I didn't notice the 3-for-2. I'll try make the switch sometime in the future. For what it's worth, I find the blood sugar thing isn't as big of an issue if I take it after a meal.

Bimuno (GOS prebiotic) price correction

Bimuno is actually quite a bit cheaper than I indicated in my above post. (I miscalculated because I forgot that I got a double order.) So if you order the Bimuno Original Prebiotic Powder Triple Pack (3 for the price of 2), it will cost about $12 for a one-month supply. (This includes shipping to the US.)
