B-vitamin question

Posted by g_g_g_unit on June 29, 2009, at 2:55:38

i'm interested in trying methylcobalamin .. in fact, i took 1000mcg this morning with some success. i've heard b12 can deplete the other b's though. compounding the problem is that, as an undermethylator, i've been told to avoid folic acid.

are the amounts of folic acid in a b-complex insignifcant enough that i can take one alongside the methyl-b12? or with a balanced diet, should i be getting adequate b intake anyway?

My opinion, I don't think you have to worry about taking extra B12 if you are getting your other Bs in a b complex and/or multi. I've heard of people taking up to 6 or 7 thousand mcgs without any problems. I don't believe B12 is something you have to worry very much about getting too much of. I could be wrong.

Oh no, I was trying to say I'm *not* taking a b complex since they all contain folic acid, which is contraindicted in undermethylators. Does that make taking just b12 a problem even if my diets pretty good?

I would take all the other b vitamins. Go to the vitamin shoppe or another vitamin store. Or, go onto vitacost and get Swanson's brand. I think there are forms of folic acid that are better for undermethylators, not sure though. Maybe methylfolate? It's worth looking into

I think Metfolin is a brand of methylfolate. Do a search on it. You may just find that you can supplement with folate after all.

"undermethylater", do you have a variate on gene MTHFR and resulting low enzyme activity? or what does that mean?

but most importantly, why should undermethylaters take folic acid? I ask because apparently I dont methylate properly because of MTHFR gene variation... but am supposed to take folic acid.
