Great anxiety product !

Posted by linkadge on August 24, 2007, at 19:12:05

Hey, I would like to share my experience with a very good product by Now Foods, called "True Calm".

The Ingredients are:

Niacin 45mg
Vitamin b6, 8mg
Magnesium, 13mg

GABA 200mg
Glycine 200mg
Taurine 200mg
Inositol 200mg

It is very rare that I find a multi ingredient product that I can agree on the ingredients.

Each tablet feels like about 0.5mg clonazepam. It is very calming and grounding but not sedating.

I do recomend it, or other products containing a similar blend.

I have tried many of these ingredents separately with marginal results, but there is some synergy here.

I don't often give a emphatic thumbs up to many products out there, but give it a try if you can find it!

Interesting. I don't usually go for combos either but this one looks good.

How long have you been taking it? How often, etc.?

This looks very very similar to a product I used to take called GABA Calm by Country Life. These nutrients are supposed to help the GABA get to where it works and enhance GABA effectiveness in the brain.

The gaba is just one ingredient, and if it doesn't do all that much then hey, who knows.

Anyhow, I take it 1-2 times per day and it is definately helping.

This is very interesting . . . I recently heard of a product called Alpha Calm -- sounds like it's similar. My question is -- can these products be used instead of St. John's Wort? I'm trying to find something to replace SJW because of the concerns of it counteracting with my statins.

Its difficult to say. If you have more depressive symptoms, you may need to take a supplement with more of an antidepressant effect.

If you are taking SJW for anxiety, then an anxiety supplement may replace it.

Are there any blood tests that could help you take both SJW and a statin.

Are stopping SJW just on its propensity to alter the statin's blood level?

Link, I've tried glycine, inositol and taurine.
I've found taurine to be an effective mood stabilizer and is great against racing thoughts, anxiety, brainfog, muscle weakness and insomnia.
When I take glycine I don't notice any dramatic difference, maybe dose need be pretty high in order to be effective.
Inositol is really strange. It's a stimulant but it also destabilizes mood at the same time.
Never tried GABA but I've read that GABA has tendency to poop out.

GABA isn't proven to get through the blood brain barrier, and it can have side effects such as increasing anxiety especially with regard to laboured breathing. Finding the right dosage is obviously important;. Start low and work up to an effective dosage. A synergistic combination of GABA, Inositol and Niacinamide can be effective. Although don't expect miracles. Supplements usually are quite subtle and can take substantially longer to achieve a desired effect than pharmaceuticals. They do usually have a much lower side effect profile and usually work with the body rather than against it.

The product I took felt like a benzodiazapine on the first dose. YMMV of course, but that was my initial thought.

I have heard a lot of conflicting information regarding GABA. One guy said that the results about GABA not crossing the BBB came out around the same time that gabapentin hit the market.

Who knows.

Dr. Michael Murray has an article about GABA in his newsletter saying:

"Studies with synthetic GABA have shown that it does not cross the blood-brain barrier very well. That led to the assumption that virtually all of the GABA found in the brain is manufactured there and that supplemental GABA would not increase levels of GABA in the brain. That appears to be the case with synthetic GABA, but not with natural GABA in the form of PharmaGABA - a special form of GABA naturally manufactured from Lactobacillus hilgardii – the bacteria used to ferment vegetables in the preparation of the traditional Korean dish known as kimchi."

He cites a study done in Japan, complete with pic of the anxiety producing bridge. http://www.doctormurray.com/newsletter/05-17-2007.htm

He works for Natural Factors these days, I believe, and PharmaGABA is their product. Is this just marketing or could there be a difference in efficacy between how the GABA is produced? Perhaps this accounts for the conflicting reports.

You have to be very dubious about the claims made about PharmaGABA since the Dr himself has a vested interest in the product. Double blind impartial studies would be a start, or failing that an independent 'guinea pig' to test the product. Any volunteers? :)

Here's the product I used to take (see below), which is very very similar to the Now Foods True Calm products. Please look at the links below and compare them >

I've tried combining cysteine, taurine, GABA and so far I like it. I found all to be stimulators but without the stress factor.
They reduce brainfog and cause no airheadedness. I can't really see how GABA would help with sleep... for me it's stimulating.

I have some leftover inositol and will try to add it. Maybe inositol will enhance the effect of these AAs since inositol works as a second messenger. Before when I've tried it it would distabilize mood, but it might work differently in combo with mood stabilizers.

Tried inositol today and unfortunately it still makes me agitated.

It also does not pass the blood-brain barrier
so don't waste your money.
