Very high doses of fish oil - safe? common?

Posted by Caedmon on March 30, 2007, at 12:30:36

Hi hi,

I take fish oil to treat depression, brain fog, and amotivation. (The usual suspects.) I seem to get the best response from fish oil if I take relatively high doses - usually about 6-8 grams of EPA/DHA. This amounts to many, many pills as you can imagine, but it works.

Is this safe? Does anyone else do this, or have this experience? I have no side effects while taking this dose, btw.

- Chris

The traditional Inuit diet includes 20-70 grams/day of the long-chain omega-3s. Just be wary of the urge to build igloos while driving or operating heavy machinery.

Hi Chris, I was just wondering what concentration you take at once. Do you spread it out over the day? Is there a specific brand that you recommend? Thanks, Karen

I take the garden variety 180 EPA/ 120 DHA pills, usually bought when on sale at Riteaid or if I happen to be in a Walmart. I switch brands around so I couldn't tell you what works best - right now, I have a bottle of the GNC brand in the freezer.

I take them whenever I'm eating a meal, the number of pills varying in proportion to the fattiness of the meal (more or less). It might be 2 pills or it might be as many as 12. For example, if I'm eating lots of pizza, I down a lot of fishy pills. I've no idea if this is the best way, but it certainly minimizes seal burps. Needless to say, I try to incorporate plenty of fish in my diet to accompany all those pills.

I just think it's odd that I get only a vague, mild benefit at 'normal' doses, but a decent response at a high dose.

For me it's helpful in keeping the brain fog at bay (well, partly at bay). I also have fewer moments of totally spacing out and/or falling into a melancholic funk. It kind of smooths out my ability to stay active throughout the day. It's no panacea but it has some usefulness!

I've been taking 10 fish oil capsules per day for 6 months (180mg EPA/120mg DHA per 1000mg capsule) for depression. This is 1.8 gram EPA per day. I am using a cheap brand "Thompson's" at $20 per 400 caps. It is the standard fish oil, namely it's not deodorised. I have no adverse effects on this dose and no fishy after taste or 'seal burps'

I'm also on Nardil, which is a powerful MAOi AD. The last 2 months I've been reducing the Nardil dosage from 45 mg per day and am currently on 15 mg per day. So far I have experienced some discontinuation effects ...depression, headaches, irritability, brain fog, dizziness & nausea. However, most of these effects have disappeared or become very mild. Still some brain fog & headaches at times.

Not sure if the fish oil is protecting me from the depression returning at its worst. I've been on the Nardil for the last 17 years, so this is a big scary step to take. I'll keep you posted on my progress.
