what is Siberian euthero?

Posted by laima on January 27, 2007, at 9:46:14

I saw this all over the local vitamin store the other day. Did I even spell it right? I can't find it in wikipedia for an overview. (Well, I can't find rhodolia in there, either.) Are they the same thing, and finally, what happens if one tries to take it with Emsam?

The staff there are no help, the second one mentions "I use this prescription medication..." they want nothing to do with the customer's questions! Too bad my doctor doesn't even believe in garden variety vitamins.

Its called siberian ginseng and its in wiki:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siberian_ginseng

Its an adaptogen and said to be more 'feminine' than ginseng proper (there's another type of ginseng called panax ginseng), whatever that means (my herbalist said that).

Anyway, its not the same as Rhodiola rosea either. Look on the bottles - any supplement worth taking should have the species name (usually in italics) written on it.

Hmm. I would exercise caution with combining herbs with ensam. I don't think there's enough research out there. Perhaps if you have a pdoc well versed in conventional and alternative pschiatry it would be okay (Dr Hyla Cass being one such pdoc) but they are obviously few and far between.

Kind regards

Meri

BTW rhodiola is in wiki too:

From recollection it is said to be less stimulating than normal (sorry, it's early, that's the best I can do) ginseng. More physical and less mental perhaps? Though I find all of the things like ginseng overstimulating.....even withania somnifera.

Thanks you guys! I guess I'm not a very good speller. I thought rhodolia had another alias, something to do with Siberia- which is how the confusion began. I remember reading it on a rhodolia bottle once, where they waxed on about its wonderful history, blah blah. I have taken rhodolia with Emsam though- worked out absolutely fine. A friend told me he did it- he was fine, too. I think the danger would be overstimulation/heart-rate issues. Obviously, wouldn't try this along with a prescription stimulant.
