Pregnancy natural remedies for major depression?

Posted by april8 on August 25, 2005, at 8:51:41

Hi, I have Major depressive disorder and it gets very bad in the winter. So far I have been on Wellbutrin 300 mg and 150 Effexor SR they have worked wonders.

But now i am pregnant so have to go off of them, does anyone know of a natural remedy to at least help me a little while pregnant. I have a light box which I use on top my meds now so I will for sure use that. But is there anything else/

Honestly I am scared because I don't want to get depressed. The meds have changed my life for the last 4 years.

HELP!

If you're off the drugs now, I would try an alternative before resorting to meds during pregnancy.

This post will probably get directed to the alternative board, but there are some fairly effective alternatives that are definately worth a shot.

Homeopathy is completely safe to use during pregnancy and can have amazing results. If you try it, find a well recommended homeopath who will give you a 'constitutional remedy' -- one chosen out of thousands that uniquely suits you. I wouldn't recommend trying it yourself. No danger, I've just found it to be ineffective when trying it out on my own.
Best of luck to you. I can sympathize with your situation. I've had three children and was not diagnosed with depression/bipolar until after giving birth and nursing all three. I had a rough time, especially post-partem, which you should also give good thought to.

I don't know much about this topic, but I just wanted to warn you to not stop your meds suddenly. Effexor in particular is known for having really bad withdrawal. You don't want that sort of shock to your system. If you decide to stop your meds, talk to your doc about how to do it.

Best,
EE
