Prescription for Marinol for Bipolar Disorder?

Posted by CrazyGuy on April 2, 2004, at 15:36:48

Hi. I'm trying (thus far unsuccessfully) to convince my pdoc that he should write me a prescription for Marinol (a synthetic form of THC) to alleviate my symptoms of BD. I've used marijuana in the past and found it VERY helpful for alleviating both depressive and manic symptoms. I've been on numerous "mood stabilizers", anti-depressants and atypical antipsychotics over the past 10 years (e.g. lithium, depakote, tegretol, lamictal, trileptal, prozac, zoloft, wellbutrin, trazadone, desipramine, effexor, remeron, celexa, lexapro, risperidone, zyprexa) and in various combinations and nothing seems to work with minimal side effects for any appreciable length of time. Although this pdoc said that he'd look into it, he chickened out, saying that he wasn't "comfortable" prescribing it. Of course, I thanked him for putting HIS comfort level before MINE. Unfortunately, I'm stuck with this moron for the forseeable future. Has anybody else received a prescription for Marinol from a pdoc? (My former pdoc in another state, who I talked to recently, indicated that he has prescribed it for at least one of his patients and I think he'd prescribe it for me if I were still under his care....) Any advice would be MUCH appreciated!!! I suppose I can just ask around among friends/acquaintances and find a new source of marijuana, but I'd prefer to be given X number of pills to last X number of days so that (a) I know exactly what dose of THC (synthetic) I'm getting and (b) I don't get into the situation where I'm tempted to overindulge....

>Hi There
Funny you should mention this because just tonight I smoked some really good weed and it has helped me so much! I feel more alive than I've felt in a month (I've been in a black depression with serious anxiey). Anyway, tonight I laughed for the first time and felt like myself. THC frees up my mind and I consider it medicine.
Peace and good luck!

I've been on and off of tons of meds like you, and the one thing that has helped me the most in terms of mood and stabilazation has been pot. I'm dying to try a prescription of marinol. When I smoked everyday it didn't make me high anyway, it just helped me. That's what I'm looking for now in marinol.

an update: about 8 months ago i started seeing a new primary care physician. i told him of my less-than-successful attempt to get my (now ex-) pdoc to try out marinol with me. after speaking with my former psychiatrist in another state, my PCP did write me a prescription for marinol and has since renewed the prescription twice. my mood is MUCH improved, i'm sleeping better and am much more productive at work. i'm also just generally happier and optimistic and don't have to struggle with the overwhelming desire to shoot myself in the head. life is, indeed, better on marinol!!!

And I would love to get a prescription myself!
I have a mood disorder, ( my whole family does) although it is much better than it used to be.

OMG that's so great! I've posted here before about marijuana, the best way I can explain it is it flips a switch in my brain. Something starts working that wasn't before. Unfortunetaly I can't control my consumption and my wife will be gone if she catches me again anyway.

I've been reading some stuff about ADHD and marijuana and apparently it can be an effective treatment for some.

I'm not sure if all the time I was smoking pot helped me, but it's very possible. I'm just wondering if you ever have paranoia? That was the only thing I found to be negative, and I'm thinking maybe people who get paranoid from THC have some kind of different depression than those who don't (for whatever reason...and I have no idea what I'm talking about, just thinking out loud). Thanks.
MM
