herbs that activate 5-ht1a

Posted by linkadge on August 29, 2004, at 16:39:58

I found a website at one point that listed some herbs that activated the 5-ht1a receptor. Black cohash was one of them, but am concerned about taking this one cause some studies showed links to liver problems.

Does anyone else know of any herbs that activate the 5-ht1a receptor.

Ginkgo biloba clearly enhances 5-HT1a sensitivity.

I remember one or two studies that said kava effected that specific receptor, which I think they said contributed to the sleep inducing / anxiolytic effect. I'd suggest doing a google search on that to obtain the studies I've seen. It's interesting you ask about that receptor and what herbs effect it, since I have had the same curiously for a while. It seems that the studies that show that herbs do effect serotonin aren't specific for receptors. St John's effects 5-Ht2a... that doesn't help though. Rhodiola is said to effect serotonin, but who knows where... too bad they can't start doing more of these specific studies.

The meds that acttivate the 5-ht1a receptor the most seem to be the more effective antidepressants, and anxiolitics. I heard that both black cohash and dong quai affect the 5h-t1a receptor but I als heard the can be bad for the liver.
