HELP! Need supplements to increase Lexapro effect

Posted by h on August 4, 2004, at 13:49:41

I am on 10 mg of lexapro. I was on 800 mg of Cimetidine as well for a long time. The lexapro works great. But apparently the Cimetidine increases the effectiveness of the lexapro, so I was getting more than my 10 mg worth.

Then it turns out that the Lexapro cimetidine combination was too hard on my kidneys. I stopped the cimetidine, but does that mean the effectivenes of the lexapro will go down?

I wish I had not started the folic acid to intensify the effect of the lexapro. (What can I tel you? I'm greedy to just feel happy.) Any other natural supplements that will intensify the effect of the lexapro?

I know I could increase the Lexapro but people seem to gain weight on more than 10 mg and I am scared of that.

Thanks for your help in advance.

Have you tried high doses of Omega-3 fatty acids such as fish oil?

That's interesting. I read many posts about fish oil but didn't realize that it can boost the lexapro effect in the bloodstream. is this what you mean? Thanks for your reply. h

Omega 3 is a crutial component of the serotonin and dopamine receptors. When the receptors are working properly, the available serotonin they get is much more effective.

Probably.

Why are wishing you hadn't started folic acid? It can potentiate SSRI effects, without a dose increase.

Your body has already been exposed to what was, in effect, a dose greater than 10 mg/day, due to the effect of the cimetidine. You've already "done the experiment", although by accident.

I second the motion for fish oil.

Guys,

you are one great resource! Thanks so much for all your input.

One more question.

Can I take the five grams all at once? Or is it better to spread them throughout the day?

Am on my way to pick up fish oils as of right now.

warmly and thanks again

I take the fish oil all at once, but if your stomach gets queasy, or you get eructation (burps), you might do better splitting it up. It really doesn't matter, otherwise. Just always take with food.
