A New Resolution...? :)

Posted by JenniferMarie on October 18, 2003, at 8:43:44

When I got pregnant my doctor prescribed Ferrous Sulfate Green 325mg (iron) twice a day, but it made me sick so I only took it for a week during my 3rd month of pregnancy. They tested my iron and apparently I was already low before I got pregnant so I'm sure it's even lower now. I'm 7 1/2 months pregnant and recently I have been feeling VERY depressed and having panic attacks. Do you think that it could be because of my lack of iron?
IRON DEFFICIENCY SIGNS
- Nervous stress, depression, hysterical outburst.
- Lowered mental ability, poor memory.
- Anemia, pale skin.
- Exhaustion, low energy, lack of ambition.
- Low blood count, hemorrhages, nosebleeds.
- Acute infections, inflammatory diseases.
- Spitting of blood, copious menstruation
This is some information I got from this site - http://www.naturesnutrition.com/DATES/iron.htm
I have almost all of them. The other day I woke up in the morning and had a really bad nose bleed and I haven't had a nose bleed since I was a kid. Anyway, is there a good possibility that this could be causing me to be severely depressed and have panic attacks? I would much rather feel Nauseous and vomit than feel the way I do now.

maybe asking for a CBC, if you haven't had a complete count done recently - that should include a platlet count and clotting factors (they are usually not included in a CBC) can also be checked. I think this is important as you are supporting fetal growth, your own wellbeing, and you will be giving birth, too---- sorry for your difficulties as this should be a happier time for you, but you are certainly not alone with difficulites during pregnancy.

You really have to start taking the iron straight way. It's important. The reason it usually makes you nauseous is if you take it on an empty stomach. NEVER do this. Take it with meals..preferably meals with a little meat/fat...but if you take one with lunch and one with dinner ..immediately after your last mouthful of food..you will find it doesn't make you nauseous.
Also go and buy some liquid iron..the paedrictric type and take the adult amounts of this AS WELL with your dinner. This absorbs better than the tablets.
You can get iron injections, but NOT recommended as they sleave a big black stain permanently ..about 1 inch in diameter on your skin...like a tatoo.
It can take 6 months or longer to bring up your iron (ferritin) levels..so don't stop.
Ask for another iron studies with ferritin blood test.
Iron will make you a little constipated..if it does this take some magnesium twice a day too..and/or baths with epsom salts. This will stop the constipation.
Try it..I bet your depression starts lifting within a few days, let me know, OK?

Some other iron deficiency symptoms..do you have thes yet?
Hair falling out easily..like lots in the shower drain?
Heart palpitations on exertion ..
Shortness of breath ..
Fatigue ..
Does this sound like you?

BTW Ferrous fumarate and ferrous gluconate are a somewhat better choice as an iron supplement than
ferrous sulfate,in spite of the fact that many physicians and pharmacists still recommend it.

However if it is all you can get..perhaps take a VITE capsule or some antioxidants with the tablets.
If your iron tablets don't have VitC included..take some VitC too with the iron. This helps absorption of the iron and will help provide some antoxidant protection in your stomach perhaps.
Even cooking on an iron hotplate or frypan/skillet will help get those iron levels up.

I have all of them except for my hair falling out... I never realized that my iron was this low. I started taking the iron that my doctor prescribed to me and people are telling me of all kinds of other vitamins to take with it... what do you think I should take with it.. or do I need anything with it? I'm also taking Prenatal vitamins which have everything that I'm "supposed" to need.

Take iron after your last mouthful of lunch and dinner. Take some Vitc with it..about 100mg with each tablet..OR preferably buy a tablet with both in.
Take some liquid iron too if possible.
AND also for antioxidant protection as well as to help with many other things probably take a FISH OIL capsule with each tablet you take...it would be the best bet.
If you don't want to take a fish oil capsule at least take a VitE capsule or an EPO capsule with it.
Continue with prenatal vits also

PS lucky about the hair

The Vitamin C with the iron can't be emphasized enough. I was taking my regular multi-vitamin with iron but was still anemic. My pdoc told me to start taking extra C with my multi and my iron levels increased. The Vitamin C is important for the iron absorption.
