How does this make sense??

Posted by fleeting flutterby on October 20, 2009, at 11:52:09

I don't post a whole lot but I do read a couple of the forums almost daily. and I've yet to figure out how it is of any help to anyone but admin, for someone to only say that they changed their screen name but not list their old one-- how does that help others if they have no clue what the old screen name was?? (I imagine Admin has ways to tell but the rest of us are at a disadvantage, arent we?) It feels so confusing to me, that at times I've just not posted as I'm not even sure if so and so is who I think they are. *sigh*.... yipes.... it's like dissociating ..... puts ones head in a spin and doesn't feel safe :o(

I wish there was some other way to let others know who someone used to be........ I know that their friends will be told and that must feel safe-- but-- if you're like me and haven't any friends and are hypervigilent about feeling comfortable-- what is one to do?

sometimes it can feel like just too much to cope with here...... *blushing*...... I probably sound like a real nut case..... just wanted to ask if there is some other way or how can one feel "connected" when they aren't even sure who they are corresponding with?.....

I s'pose it's all just my baggage and everyone else is fine with the status quo..... I"m not trying to complain or cause upset... just was wondering how it makes any sense and how can someone like me feel less confused, *shrugs*, if there is a way.....

thank you

I forgot to say that this is not pointed at those that have changed their name..... I'm just asking Admin how this policy makes sense and if they have any suggestions to make some of us(maybe it's just me *blushing*) feel safe and more connected.

thx- flutterby

As I recall, it came about as a compromise, and like most compromises may not be *entirely* pleasing to anyone at all.

The idea was that there can be good reasons to wish to change a name, even change it anonymously. But that it could be a bit crazymaking to be talking to someone who appeared to be a newcomer but who had the advantage of you (in the old fashioned sense of the word) in that they already had a history with you, while you had no idea of that.

So the compromise was to announce the name change, thus making it clear that a "new" poster wasn't actually new, but to make it completely a matter of choice whether to announce who they used to be.

Who has had, on occasion, other posting names, but always some variant of Dinah.

---flutterby--: Oh, I didn't know that.

---flutterby--: this is, I think, what makes me feel uneasy-- "it could be a bit crazymaking to be talking to someone who appeared to be a newcomer but who had the advantage of you (in the old fashioned sense of the word) in that they already had a history with you, while you had no idea of that." ....
.... You said it better than I did. :o) It can feel confusing and unsafe, for some of us.

---flutterby--: Ah! So it's only a matter of knowing whether the poster is new or not-- NOT a matter of who exactly they were before. I understand now-- thank you. still, I'll be leery of unknown poster names, since I don't know if I knew them before or not...... kind of like dissociating....*sigh*......ugh.....

---flutterby--: heh, now THAT I could feel comfortable with-- some form of the old name. :o) Thanks Dinah for explaining, I appreciate it.
Guess the hypervigilence and confusion will just hang on in this head of mine- while i'm here at this site.... since there's no way to know who WAS who......??..... darn it....
