Including email addresses in posts

Posted by Dr. Bob on February 24, 2001, at 15:58:55

Hi, everyone,

You may have noticed that I've changed how you indicate whether you want your email address included in your posts:

1. Since it's in your registration information, you shouldn't have to re-enter it. Now you can just click a box. If you've changed your email address since you registered, please update it at:

https://dr-bob.securesites.com/cgi-bin/pb/signup.pl

2. Originally, I wanted to make it easy for people to connect with each other, so if you included your email address once, it was automatically filled in for you the next time.

But now the site's grown and more people see what's posted. So I've changed the default to be *not* to include it -- so each time you *do* want to include it, you need to click the box again.

Any comments? If this works OK, I'll try to revise the existing pages (and then I'll be able to get rid of the email cookie).

Bob

Excellent idea, that way user action is required
to post their e-mail address. More secure and nubie proof, i.e a nubie who did not read everything will not by accident post their e-mail address.

I had posted my e-mail address before, but since then have started to get a lot of garbage e-mail, advertising, porno links, etc. I suspect this started because of posting my e-mail. I've changed my nick-name and now am even considering having my e-mail address changed. Unfortunately whoever it is that is sending the unsolicited junk is making it uncomfortable for me to let the children use the e-mail software without myself screening the incoming mail. :(

Sorry to hear that. If it was just once or twice, and you show me where, I can go back and delete it...

I highly doubt smammers are harvesting e-mail addresses here as there is not a large enough density of them. There are too many other places
with better density to harvest from. Even if you do not give out your e-mail address you can still get spammed.

I use an email address dedicated to an egroup and to this site only - I never use it anywhere else.. I have *never* had a single bit of spam in it and I've been using it for a year now!!!

When I used to include my e-mail address on PB I never got SPAM. I did get (and still do occasionally) some e-mails from people I don't know, asking questions about drugs. I assume that these are people who have found some of my past answers through search engines (including the one on this site).

I do make it a policy not to answer these e-mails; more out of a possible liabilty issue, rather than not wanting to help someone. If I am going to answer a question, I'd rather the question be posted on PB, so that if I make a mistake in my answer it will more than likely be caught by someone here. I like to think of it as a safety issue.

Again, I have never received SPAM from posting my e-mail address on this site and now that I said that, I hope that I won't in the future. - Cam

That's a good word for it! Perhaps a well meaning friend thought I would find use for them. The really disturbing thing is the advertisement of the x-rated stuff, considering my children.

Thank you Boss for offering, but I guess it isn't such a big deal.
