Is emotional abuse legal?

Posted by Lamdage22 on December 16, 2021, at 14:49:13

From what I have gathered it is only illegal if it is done in an overt way and over a period of time. Like repeatedly things like "You piece of sh*t, you will never achieve anything". The backhanded, covert way seems to not bother any lawmakers. I am experiencing this. Needs to change.

Who's abusing you? Maybe you can get them out of your life?

My parents. It is hard to get them out. Stockolm syndrome. Something like that.

To me they do. My psychologist isnt unreceptive to the idea. And what I read about narcissism in books and online rings a bell.

I've read a lot about narcissism, but have forgotten most of it. I have, or had, some complex of schizoid and narcissistic personality disorders myself. Overtly, the schizoid part dominates, and tones down/hides the narcissism. My fantasy life, however, is more narcissistic than schizoid; eg. unlimited power and wealth, ideal love, boundless success, perfectionistic ambitions of all sorts.

Sounfs like you need to talk to a skilled therapist. There are no meds for this stuff.

I had a breakthrough from free association on my own. I was writing an essay about truth and delusion, and at some point, it seemed that I hit some delusions in my unconscious, and I felt the relief of my lifetime. Suddenly, I felt I was free to be merely human, not having to live up to (hidden) ideals of grandeur (narcissistic) and self-sufficiency (schizoid).

I don't know if I'm "cured", but I'm not aware of any diagnostic test to determine that. I agree that a skilled therapist might be helpful, but it's not like they grow on trees.

It sounds like an epiphany(ish) experience. You fid that on your own? Impressive. If all else fails you could try to work that way some more. And for what its worth, I like a narcissistic person that is aware much more than someone who is narcissistic and thinks hes perfectly fine.

I wonder why no one chimes in. Abuse is not an infrequent cause of mental distress/illness. Have they repressed and dont want to face their own abuse?

Yes.

I wasn't expecting anything. That's probably one reason why it happened. If I had had some motive, other than writing, it would probably have affected the associations and led me in a less fruitful direction.

> Impressive. If all else fails you could try to work that way some more.

If I had the inspiration, or lack of apathy, I would write a lot more.

It may not be obvious to the observer, but the pathological narcissist is lacking in genuine self-esteem, and therefore needs to continuously collect positive feedback ("narcissistic supply") from outside of himself to reassure himself that he's good and worthy.

I myself used to feel shame when reality contradicted the unconscious delusional ideals, and I was not aware of what was happening. I guess a lot of pathological narcissists will automatically go into a fit of rage rather than allow themselves time to feel the shame, and they are likely not conscious of it at all.

I may have a hint of those fantasies, too. It wouldnt surprise if I am truly the child of narcissistic parents. I want to be exeptionally good at stuff.

My brother is the same. We were raised to be like that. He actually succeeds in being exceptionally good. It is a dangerous path though.

"You don't deserve love unless you are exceptionally good". That type of childrearing.
