I heard here that Tryptophan is a precursor to beneficial substances other than 5-HTP?

Decarboxylation of tryptophan yields tryptamine, a trace amine that possibly has MDMA/ecstasy-like properties. I don't know anything about it, because I haven't investigated it either through reading nor by trying tryptamine itself, unlike phenylethylamine (PEA).

not sure, 5-htp is directly convered to serotonin, tryptophan has go through a metabolism process. I guess tryptophan is the old version of 5-htp

I read it is also precursor for beneficial substances other than Serotonin.

At least tryptamine; see my first response. I don't know how beneficial it is.

If you've talked about your Tryptophan deficiency before, sorry I didn't find it. I'm wondering if it's a genetic condition?

I posted quite a while ago here about a genetic condition I have causing deficiency in neurotransmitters, would love to find others who have same diagnosis but it's so rare I can't find anyone to compare notes with. Also almost impossible to find an expert neurologist, although the UK offers better diagnosis and treatment at UCL than where I am in the US. My post was about dopa-responsive dystonia, caused by genetic enzyme deficiency, it causes variable symptoms, even within famillies.

Thanks for all your 5-HTP posts. I'm looking into that for myself now.

I think that stress uses up Tryptophan/5HTP. I would say that mental afflictions are stress.

In 1992, the NIH (National Institutes of Health) performed an experiment on people with and without depression. The condition to be explored was a state of 5-HT (serotonin) depletion. This experiment has been repeated in other studies. The two study groups were given the same diet that always results in reduced 5-HT in the blood. This was accomplished by having the subjects ingest large amounts of a drink that had no tryptophan in it. Tryptophan is the only substance (amino acid) that the body can use to manufacture serotonin. The rate limiting step in the metabolic process is the conversion of tryptophan to 5-HTP. From there, several other chemical compounds are derived, including serotonin and melatonin.

The results of the experiment demonstrated that people without depression experienced no changes in their mood. The people with depression experienced a significant worsening of their depressed mood.

The pathway that results in the manufacture of 5-HT (serotonin):

- tryptophan (amino acid) + tryptophan hydoxylase (enzyme) = 5-hydroxytryptomine (5-HTP) [rate-limiting step]

- 5-HTP + aromatic amino acid decarboxylase = 5-HT (SEROTONIN)

- 5-HT + serotonin N-acetyltransferase = N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine (MELATONIN): via NAT or NAS

Thanks, Scott. Depletion of catecholamines, well, is not that much of a concern for me. Less dopamine might be more. The catecholamine precursors blood levels are good. Tryptophan is not.

Honestly, if prone to psychotic like symptoms, isn't it good if dopamine goes down a bit? I have heard this from other sources. It doesn't worry me. I think they just like to bully precursor treatments because it is competition.
