I tried an antidepressant called Effexor sometime last year (terrible memory) and found it made if feel like i was a souless robot when i was on it and coming off was worse than coming of of an opiate. That experience made me promise never to try another one again. Now just a few weeks ago I heard someone saying something about an herb called maca being used for something or other, i decided to look it up and liked what i read. Increased energy and memory, lifting of mood, (also used as an aphrodisiac) so I decided to try it. After buying some liquid extract, i mixed about 40 drops with some warm water and felt the effects set on within a couple of minutes. I felt more energy flowing through me and a definite lift in mood. (increase in memory comes with long term use) In fact all of the depression I was feeling that day was gone! The only side effects i could find was loss of appetite and weight loss. In fact, with long term use, it is said to reduce stress leading to longer lifespan. I was amazed, something cheap, legal, and awsome I could use in place of an anti-depressant which has no negative side effects, or it will once I get used to remembering to eat. Admittedly, when I'm really depressed, it takes a higher dose to shake it off, and it is somewhat addictive, but I'd rather be addicted to that then some antidepressant. I would also suggest this to someone for stress relief, increase in sexual function (helpful, but don't expect Viagra) and it could work wonders for dieting! Also, it has strange effects on recreational drugs I have found, here are the one's I've noted:
Marijuana: Increase in energy, less stoned feeling, memory not as bad, more motivation, brighter colors, may notice a "tripping" feeling.
Ecstacy: Strong dizzyness on onset of E, Stronger body high, stronger psychological effects, more visual distortions/hallucinations.
Kava: More energy, laughing moods.
DXM: Terrible nausea lasting the whole trip.
Alcohol: More awake, less stupid.
Oxycontin (opiate): More nausea, more social sort of ectacy feeling (could just be flashbacks).
Those are the ones I have tried so far, though there are certainly many others.

Oh yea, forgot to mention, i have found the powder drink mix and pills don't work for me, maybe cause i'm looking for noticable effects. Oh and the powder tastes pretty gross.

I *think* it was maca, there's so many of these things, but I loved the taste. Is this the Peruvian yam thingo?
I wondered if it was aggravating my insomnia, which has been so easily aggravated that it's hard to be sure.
Other than that it sounded excellent.

I could see it possibly interfering with sleep as it gives a lot of energy, i only use it during the night. For insomnia I take Valerian Root every night, it works great and I have intense dreams as well, which I like. Wake up feeling refreshed. The suggested dose is 2 pills but I only use one, find 2 is too strong and I still feel it in the morning. You might also want to try Kava, good for relaxation. Good luck!
