Medications to help quit drinking?

Posted by RobertDavid on June 1, 2006, at 15:01:25

Well, this alcohol thing is bigger than me. I go 5 days or so, then get tanked. Swear it off forever only to do it again and again and again. Been to 1 AA meeting and was very uncomfortable. I'm going to seek therapy for my dual disorters of alcohol and anxiety. I've heard that I have to stop klonopin to stop drinking, dont abuse the klonopin, but some say it keeps me drinking, dont know. But no klonopin equals unbearable social anxiety. Just wondered if any of you could offer suggestions, I have to stop this and stop today.

There is no magic pill. But this one can definitely help. Campral, brand name for acamprosate.

Read the first paragraph on the page, and then poke around the other pages (tabbed, near the top).

Go ahead. Ask questions.

I know. Have you ever considered trying NA? It is a totally different crowd. People trying to help themselves all the same. Don't be turned of by the acronym. Alcohol is a drug too (nothing new.) I cannot explain nor can I express enough. It would be worth a visit. Larry can you attest?

I don't know anything of Klonopin, but I don't think anything really "keeps you drinking." I drink no matter what I take. I drink, therefore I drink. Cheers. (sorry)

Useless information follows:
I go through the weekly or bi-weekly cycles where I drink very little for a few days and heavy for most others (occasionally I go without altogether for a day or two.) I know my cycle too well. I can almost tell you how much I will be drinking on any given day.
