Something I am wondering about

Posted by Happyflower on March 22, 2007, at 19:06:52

My T said that most of his undergrad psych classes had multiple choice questions on tests since they were very large classes at a large univ.

Well I attend a smaller college which is part of a large university and most of my psych classes excect psych 101, had a lot of essays (which is concidered to be harder).
So I wonder if I am having to work harder for my grades than those who attend larger universities?Any thoughts?

I doubt it. The multiple choice questions aren't as straight forward as you think.

If I remember from my undergraduate, from the answers there were at least two correct ones. The trick to picking the right one was imbedded in the question, so you had to know something ABOUT the question as well as the answer.

You could pick a right answer and still be wrong.
I felt like pulling my hair out sometimes.

Also, in most of my big lower level classes, the tests would be about 200-250 questions spanning 3-4 chapters or (even worse) a half a semester worth of the course. We had one hour to complete the test

Essay questions suck because you have not only know the material, but be able to express it coherently.

But it my experience, things are rough all over.

it really depends. some colleges--large and small--are known for their grade inflation. Others are known for being particularly difficult. Surprisingly, prestigious schools are sometimes notorious for grade inflation, while less prestigious schools are known for being difficult. The issue may not be the size of the school per se, but rather the rigor of the institution as a whole.
