POLL

Posted by alexandra_k on October 5, 2004, at 19:46:31

Do you think that the students board should be restricted to those willing to register with a .edu (or international varient) email address - or do you think there should be no restriction on posting, other than that this board is intended for the discussion of student issues (where the interpretation of 'student' can be more liberal)?

I have been having a conversation with Dr. Bob about the students board and thought a poll may be useful...

The board description reads:

'This is a message board for mutual support and education. It focuses on university student issues. Posting is limited to those registered with university e-mail addresses...This doesn't mean just students; other university community members are also welcome to participate'.

Now my thought here is that 'university student issues' aren't just restricted to those with 'university email addresses'. And also: why restricted to UNIVERSITY student issues as opposed to student issues in general? Also: university email addresses enable Dr. Bob (in a moment of boredom) to track down ones real identity, and of course compile stats regarding affiliation etc...

Of course, maybe people have other ideas regarding the students board. Here is a link to the start of the conversation

I can kind of see why Bob limited the board, but so many people are prevented from using this board because either they don't have an approved adress or they don't want the possibility of dr bob being able to trace their identity, which to me, is completely understandable.

I hereby register my vote for a lifting of the unaproved email adress ban.

I always post my school related stuff in the social board because I know more people will reply. I third it. Everyone should be allowed in the student board.

I wondered how much longer you wanted to leave this as the other poll (on the Admin board) has been archived.

This board seems dead as dead can be (no offence to people who have posted, of course).

Just a friendly reminder.

"Leave this" as opposed to delete it?

No uni issues, anyone?

No, leave making a decision as to whether you are going to lift the restriction or not.

I am guessing that nobody willing to register with a current uni email is willing to post student issues to the students board. This may well have something to do with the general opinion (indicated by the survey) regarding the posting restriction. My guess would be that this is a silent protest.

I guess that might be it...

If I had uni issues, I wouldn't post them here because I know that hardly anyone would be able to reply.

The relationship board is open to everyone, whether they are in a relationship or not. Why can't this be the same?

I am still wondered how much longer you wanted to leave making your decision...

How about we give it through the end of the year?

Well, I think that everyone who is interested has already let you know what they think, and everyone seems to be in agreement about lifting the posting restriction. However, it is your decision at the end of the day, and you do not seem to like the idea.

Is it the tendancy people have to retain a hypothesis / opinion even after the reasons in support of it have been found to be lacking? There is a name for this (a civil one) but I forget...

This board seems to have died.

But it is your decision at the end of the day. I've done the best I can.

Yours respectfully.

I just keep hoping for new posters...

But think how many more you'd get if all of them were allowed to post here.

Please Dr. B. It would be nice if someone could let me know of more institutions that don't require GRE scores BEFORE applications are due next Jan. Seriously, I know I can just post it to social, but I don't like to do this. Not when this board it here. Dying, before our very eyes. I really do believe that it can be revived, though.

But on the other hand, I do have problems with impulse control, and so maybe this is an opportunity for me to learn patience.

OK, close enough, let's try it the other way now. Thanks again for your patience,

Bob

Well, you were right! Thanks for pushing this. :-)
