how i got to play the tenor saxaphone at school

Posted by alexandra_k on February 27, 2022, at 22:11:14

my high school purchased 4 tenor and 4 alto saxaphones one year.

they had try-outs. if you wanted to you could put your name down and go along to try-outs. they gave you a a saxaphone and saw if you could blow to make a sound.

i was one of the few who managed (i don't know how) to make a sound.

they picked me!

that's how i got to play the tenor saxaphone in high school.

_______

i wasn't that into it. honestly.

if they had have had tryouts at 6am i wouldn't have turned up, likely enough.

because i didn't want to do it overly or particularly, really.

it turned out to be heavy and annoying to carry around.

i was supposed to play it in the symphonic orchestra (band, basically).

we don't have walking or marching bands. we get to sit down. we usually have to play in school productions (if they choose to have a band -- which they did... or did they... i remember playing in one... cats, maybe... but not again. so maybe they ditched the band).

i don't know.

anyway... i wasn't very good at it. i didn't like to practice. i didn't have any music that i liked.

i didn't have any saxaphone music that i heard and went 'wow i want to play that or wow i want to play like that'.

i just had recorder music, really, that works for saxaphone, too (the fingering is largely the same which made it easy to play the notes in that sense).

but there was no way or sense in which i transcended playing the notes as they were written on the page.

i sort of read music. not fluently. not the very high or low notes. i suppose i could read the ones i was most used to playing. mid-range.

i never really got music

))))))

my life might have been different if i heard the girl play the violin on Treme.

I see why someone might want to play, like that.

Or some of the Irish Fiddle type bar-music. Lively...

I always wanted (really wanted) to play grand piano.

Course I did.

Chopin. The way it wants to be played. Dammit.
